rough idle and reduced mileage
« on: April 27, 2008, 07:06:59 pm »
My first post.  Thanks to all the knowledgeable contributors.  I have very limited mechanical knowledge and even less practical skill :)  Would like a few thoughts before I take the car to mechanic.  A 2005 TDI Passat with @ 52000 km.  When I'm sitting with the car in drive it vibrates quite bad.  If I slip it into Neutral the vibration reduces.  Maybe related? - (1) my mileage seems to have dropped considerably lately and (2) had both front CV Joints replaced around the same time this seem to have started and maybe imagining it but I think power is reduced and exhaust seems smokier on excelleration than before? Appreciate any thoughts - keep em simple please.

Probably pluged up intake due to EGR valve.

Needs to have th intake removed and cleaned out..

have you used the proper oil? i think its 501.1 Castrol TXT i think its called for the pump duse.  if not then your cam is probably grinding itself down to nothing... the valves start opening less and less until they stop opening at all (i believe its the intake lobe that fires the injector, which wears a lot without the proper oil)

but yes, if you've used the proper oil then zukgod is probably right on with the egr gunked up intake.  your best off getting that cleaned and then going to one of the VAG-COM guru's and having the code deleted so you don't have to worry about it in the future.  (EGR will eventually ruin your motor anyways)
