I have just installed a 1.9TD in my 1988 Vanagon GL. This engine came from Germany and has the PS bolt holes but not the holes for the AC. As I live in Southern Arizona I need AC almost 6 months of the year. My understanding is that I need the Alternator with AC and PS bracket from a 1993-1999 VW with a ABA engine. Does anyone want to sell this bracket as well as the PS pulley for a vehicle with AC? Everyone seems to want to remove their AC system so there must be a lot of these brackets around. I can pay via Paypal or

I could be wrong but i believe the ABA bracket hits the IP and won't bolt up because of this.

I'm also pretty sure the ABA one won't work. Next saturday when I go to the junkyard I can probably pick one up for you.

If the ABA Alternator bracket does not fit, does anyone know what bracket I need to add AC to my 1.9TD? It already has PS on a separate belt but no place to mount AC compressor.
Instead of changing out the present alternator bracket is it possible for a good AC shop to fabricate a mount for the AC compressor?? I have the one from the 1988 Vanagon but could also buy a rebuilt one if that facilitated the process.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I had no luck at the wreckers in regards to brackets this weekend.
As for the fabing, I think you would need to go to a shop with the vehicle and see what they say

The one from an aaz, 1z or ahu I believe is what you are needing. I had part number somehwere. They are tough to find.It took me awhile to find mine.:-) Keep an eye on the ebay and check here and tdi forums occasionally someone has one.

There is a guy on the Vortex selling a 1z/AHU AAZ style accessory bracket... he is wanting 200.00 + shipping from what I gathered from him. A bit pricey.
I think someone really needs to get a ABA bracket and see if it will or will not fit for sure. The biggest difference is the extra ear on the AAZ, 1z/AHU bracket that attaches the bracket to the IP bracket as well. They are readily available in our pick-a-parts around here....for about 15.00.
Maybe I'll get one and check next time I am up there.
I question the fitment based upon the fact that it can be readily used on a 16v motor (I had a aba bracket a while back...for this reason...but sold it a while ago too when i decided to go mTDI in the b3 instead of another 16v). The protrusion of the 16v manifold is quite signifcant though a injection pump mounted, etc, would sit "lower" on the block than the 16v manifold would protrude...that is possiby where the conflict would come in. Guess we won't know until we try.

I can actually verify with 110% certainty the aba doesn't fit the diesel. I was leaving room for error previously in case someone had found a new method of using it. The top of the aba bracket hits the IP. The aaz/1z bracket has the tensioner lower and in a different position as well as the small ear to bolt to IP bracket. New they are over $300. The end tends to wear oblong on the high mileage abused ones. Mine was taken apart cleaned and regreased/sealed before reinstallation.

Thanks for confirming that the ABA bracket DOES NOT fit. I spoke to the VW dealer in Tucson. He said the bracket that fit (I assume the IZ/AHU one) was in excess of $400 new. Unfortunatelt, when it was obvious I did not want to pay that much he did not give me the part number. If you could search around and find it I would sure appreciate the effort.
This morning I am going to the garage where we installed the engine and discuss options. To date I have not had luck finding the IZ/AHU bracket in the slavage yard around Tucson as there were very few of the TDIs sold around here. My best bet is to go to one of the big yards in Phoenix although it is actually less hassle if I can find one on the internet.
Thanks again for your assistance.

Part Number: 028 903 139 T or j or ab. One was obsolete, not sure which. They are far easier to find in the great white north since they have had far more turbo diesels up there. You could try emailing some canadian junkyards.

Thanks for the part number. I am certain that you are right--up north is where the used part is likely to be found.
I will start searching through one of the Canadian vendors.

BigVWMan or others,
I took the parts number 028903139T and put it in a copy of VagCat that was posted on another forum (
http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/Ts/). This came up with the picture of the parts for a 1997 Golf Variant. From what I can tell this is the right setup. However, there are two brackets:
bracket for compressor
028903139M
bracket for alternator/for vehicle with air condit 120A/diesel eng
037903139M
If you look at VagCat there are a number of other connecting and mounting parts, flat terminal pin housing, hexagonal headed bolt, etc.
However, looking at my present setup and comparing it with the picture it seems I would need both brackets. Any idea about this? In addition to the brackets what else would I need to mount the compressor and interface the compressor with the A/C system on my 1988 Vanagon??
Sorry for dragging this out but it is to be over 100 degrees F, or over 40 degrees C, next week in Tucson--and the summer has just started!!
