Finally got my car on the road... almost
« on: April 22, 2008, 05:09:51 am »
I've been working for about the past month trying to get the 91 golf my Uncle gave me ready for the road. The car was at my friends house back in North Bay so I could only go work on it sunday night after work until monday night because I had to catch the 5:05am bus back to Sudbury.

To make a long story short, it's now registered, plated and insured. The mechanic forgot to do a front wheel bearing so I didn't feel safe about driving it back home last night. Back to the garage it goes.

Only 190xxx kms on it. I'm the third owner. It runs so nice and is really quiet (except the wheel bearing).

When I first got it on the road and took it for the first test drive I was like damn this thing is slow. Remember that my last car was a 92 TD jetta and before that a NA rabbit.   turns out the metal clip for adjusting the throttle cable had fallen off so I was only getting 25% of the throttle. It's much faster now.

lookin great man, glad to hear its coming together. i'm pretty sure that interior is the same as the mkII stuff i have in storage, i have most of it still. i also have some mkII-specific parts kicking around i won't ever need so let me know if you're short anything. sucks about the wheel bearing but you're almost there.

Thanks Lanny,

I'll drop by some time and give you all those starters.

I don't know what I'm doing with the interior yet. I have grey recaros to go in it.

Well I'm still working on my first tank. I'm just under 1/4 tank and have gone 700-800 kms. Good, but not good enough. I think I'll try and do a tranny swap this week. It's so fruggen loud with that stupid AWY tranny. 3300 RPM at 100 KPH

thats like my tranny.... its total garbage for highway, but around town i can stick it in 5th and cruise along at 50 kph at stupid low rpm's.   i think they designed it for cruise control, because i can accelerate pretty good once past around 80 kph.  i thought my turbo was spooling faster than my old '86 jetta, but in reality it was the ratio's in my tranny.  i'll be doing a tranny swap sometime too  :)

yours is probably a 4S. It's pretty easy to check, just look on the bellhousing. I think I want to pick up a 4S for mine, not sure yet.

Well the numbers are in; 5.7l/100kms (41mpg)

Not too bad, not too good. Hoping to get a few points higher.

I'm 100kms into my new tank already
