Is gear on end of 1.6 I.S. same as 1.9 I.S.?
« on: April 21, 2008, 10:34:47 pm »
Does anybody know if the little machined gear on the end of a 1.6 intermediate shaft is the same as the one on a 1.9 intermediate shaft?  The reason I ask, is because I'd like to use my old 1.5 vacuum pump on my 1.9.  Techtonics Tuning sells a distributor adapter ring for fitting the older 1.8 distributors into the holes of the newer 2.0 blocks, but they say that the gears are different, and you must either use your old 1.8 I.S., or put a bigger gear on your distributor in order to use the 2.0 I.S.  I'm wondering if I'm in pretty much the same boat with my 1.5 vacuum pump to 1.9 block conversion.  I'd like to use my 1.9 I.S., but may not be able to if the sizes are different.  Thanks.

the 1.9 IM pulley is smaller then the 1.6. I'm pretty sure the 1.5 and 1.6 are the same size.

Pulley size shouldn't matter much if it's bigger, but if it's smaller, then your oil pump would turn slower, which still may not matter much depending on how much slower. I can measure my 1.9 pulley if you need me to.

you won't be able to fit the timing belt on.

I just re-read your post. You are talking about the other end of the shaft aren't you?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.  Yes, I'm talking about the little gear on the end of the shaft that mates to the gear on the vacuum pump.  I am trying to find out if they're compatible with each other.

That was my next question.  Hopefully a 1.5/1.6 shaft will fit.  Or can a 1.9 vacuum pump gear be adapted to a 1.5 pump?

Why do you want the 1.5 pump?

Because I have a pristine one already, and a remanufactured 1.9 pump is $180 from VW.  I also think they look cooler. :D

that might be a possibility? the vac. pumps look the same but the gears are different on the 1.9 thier bigger so they might come off? i have not looked at one close enough to see if it came off?

Oh I see. Seems you already have the issue of the larger hole in the block for the pump covered...

I'm sure you could have the gear machined off and a 1.6 gear pressed onto the end of the shaft. Lots of custom work though $$$

It's starting to sound like a nightmare to adapt this thing.  Perhaps I ought to just pony up for a remanufactured unit.
