This is a 85 na 1.6 with a/c. Alt is out of the car. Alt belt is gone, I cut it off last year. I was going to pull this engine, but now need to get it running again. I have a alt with pully for a/c. It is one of the newer styles with the bolt with the teeth on it. I have the original 1985 ***ty bracket so I dont know if I can get these two to work together. That being said, HTF to you get a new alt belt on! It looks like I will need to remove the a/c compressor in order to get a new belt on. Is that right? I cant find the procedure in the bentley, and the search function came up with some dead links. A/C is nice, but this sucks.

Yeah. Same for Rabbit and Golf/Jetta are the same. The you need to remove the AC belt to put on the alt belt.

i did it once... was a major PITA. i accidently removed the a/c compressor bolts though (stupid me) that was a painful mistake as aligning those bolts into the compressor really really sucked!!!! theres an adjustment mechanism for the a/c compressor to remove that belt. i suggest replacing it while you're in there. apparently whoever changed the belt before (probably crappy tire) put a really long one on. the tensioning system was right at its end :shock: and the conti belt i bought was so much shorter. i had to adjust it all the way and then the belt was still hard to get on! but v belts stretch a little bit so thats all good. made tensioning the alt belt a bit tricky too.

I think the AC belt will come off by removing the waterpump pully,...
Put the alternator belt on and return the AC belt and waterpump pully to their previous postion.

OK, where is the ajustment on the ac to loosen it to remove the belt?
2nd option is to remove the water pump pulley to create slack in the belt to come off the a/c ?

Actually that's the first option.
Remove the WP pully, roll the AC belt off the crank, slip the alternator belt over the AC pully and reinstall the waterpump pully with the AC belt.
Get out from under the car and put the alternator belt on.

subsonic, you are in maine. i'd wonder if its worth the hassle to keep the AC. i know thats the first thing i pull off any car i have... and in the case of alt. belt replacements on these cars, it does make it much quicker. an alt belt in a no AC/PS car is like 5 minutes. it really is a wtf situation :lol:

HAhA true.
I just need to get this car running for a few weeks while I get the franken together. All the A/C related components will be removed when the new engine goes in. All the shifter linkage as well now that I am going to cable shift.
I will try the pulley deal and see how it goes.

Got the alt belt on, but the belt does not line up with my new alt. I screwed up and got rid of the with a/c pulley. What I have is a new alt with a no a/c pulley. If you have the correct pully please let me know. Can I rip out the compressor and install a without a/c alt belt, or is there more to it.
I need that pulley asap!

There is more to it then just ripping out the AC. You have to find the brackets to support the alt as well as a new alt. Then you have to hope that your pulley selection will line up because VW has a million configurations.
If it's just for a few weeks I wouldn't even bother with an alternator.
Doing any night driving? Multiple starts per day? Just trickle charge it each night. Keep your lights off as well as the stereo. I did it in a rabbit for a few months.

Have to drive 70 miles each way. The trip home is all at night. Almost 90 min. I think that will kill it. I could carry a second battery, but what a pain in the ass. How did you secure the alt wire bundle so you did not have any shorts?
Who has a pulley for meeeeee?

It was my cousins car. His was actually a case of a failed alternator so he just left it hooked up and carried a spare battery. Electrical tape would work, but you could just leave your alt in there as well
Night driving is dicey. I don't know if I would risk it

I did this today, pulled the WP pully and the AC belt rolled off.... easy as a non-AC setup.
The alternator pully you want has no neck right? Sits right on the fan blades?

Thats the one. Duane has hooked me up with the correct pulley. I ended up loosening the a/c compressor and pushing down. Belt popped right off.
