Head Removal and Replacement link ? (1.6 IDI - 89 Jetta)
« on: April 18, 2008, 01:43:50 pm »
I have been perusing various topics in this forum but haven't yet stumbled upon a detailed description of how to remove & replace the cylinder head.

I do have the bentley's manual, however, I am wondering if someone has taken the time to provide a more detailed description of what is involved.

Does anyone have a pointer to a great link or links that would help me with this undertaking ?  (BTW, I have a bad head gasket)

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Basically, I followed the manual.  Just remember, put in the cam lock and pump lock in order to keep the engine at TDC.  Also make sure you get the head gasket with the correct number of notches.  This should correspond to your current head gasket.  Just to sum up the steps:
1. Remove valve cover and install cam lock
2. Remove timing belt cover and install pump lock
3. loosen timing tensioner and pull belt off of the cam pulley
4. Remove injector lines (including rubber vent line)
5. Remove coolant hoses from front and side of cylinder head
6. Unplug oil pressure wire and glow plug wire
7. Remove intake manifold
8. Remove Exhaust manifold
9. Remove bolt that holds the alternator bracket to the head
10. Loosen and remove head bolts
11. Lift off head
