Are they really needed with the new low sulfur diesel on the market.?
If you are running an IDI without a rebuilt pump they are highly recomended from what I understand. It would seem that the new ULSD is really a very dry fuel and its very hard on the old seals in out pumps. I personaly have always run howes diesel additive in my car, but some old timers will swear by a bit of ATF or motorcycle injection oil, to keep the system well lubed.

PS: If anyone cares to prove me wrong on any of this please feel free, like i said this is just how i understand it, and there are many people on this board who are more knowlegeble then myself (end disclaimer)
I've been using Stanadyne Performance Forumla for about 5 years now. Never had any issues with it. It also revamps the lubricity for better pump and injector operation, and the seals, of course.

I use 2 stroke oil as an additive - way cheaper than the regular diesel additives.

that may prolong old pump seal life too.

how much oil per tank?
I just use Amsoil Cetane boost for a bit more and cleaner power

i dump a litre of what ever is on sale at the time ( 2 stroke oil ) every couple tanks .
some times i'll dump some atf ( any brand / type will work i litre per tank ) again what ever is cheapest .
this will also help clean the injectors due to the high amounts of detergants in the oil .

I wonder about the friction modifiers hurting the IP and injectors though...
In the ATF I mean..
Way back when we used ATF to fill up the fuel filter when we changed them out but at some point we stopped as we were told they had started adding these friction modifiers to aid the friction disks in the trans to grip better/last longer...

look at the rest of a trasmision that uses atf , in a automatic they have various types of oil pumps and bearings under presure .
many of the ford . mazda based manual transmisions use atf , as well as the transfer cases .
in a limited slip diferential , the proper gear oil have a friction modifier .
any motorcycle with a "wet " style clutch has to have a friction modifier .
when i had my yz250 i used to run ford type f all the time in the gear box , due to the fact it is a more " grabby " type of fluid compared to dextron 3 .
the friction modifier is desgined to work with the clutch lining to allow it to grab the "steel " next to it .
any metal on metal contact is properly lubricated
if your worried about it use something like dextron3 which is designed to "slip a bit " for softer shifts , that say like a ford type f .
My two cents - I added some ATF about three months ago to my 89 due to some leaking on the pump. (No time and too cold to work on). Seemed to work on the seals etc. - prolly need to o-hual the pump and all the seals. For what it is worth I think ULSD is and will have an effect on the older diesels out there - the actual symptoms will vary.
I cannot be sure what is best but I would suggest something as opposed to nothing - if only to make sure the ol' lube factor is there as well as keeping the seals at their best.
Then again I might just be crazy!
