Author Topic: Cable Clutch setup for 02A / 02J Pic's and part numbers (Read 19483 times)

Thought this would be of help to people interested in doing the swap to a stronger transmission, yet wanting to stay with a mechanical cable clutch.

There are kits out there to convert the hydraulic clutch to a cable clutch. In addition, an early (1990 or 1991) 16v Passat or Corrado G60 will have a cable actuated clutch. Performing this conversion requires much less fabrication than keeping the hydraulic clutch.

In order to swap over to a cable clutch setup, you will need the parts noted below, referencing the numbers on the picture:

European/UK Parts:

Actuator (#10): VAG part # 02A 141 708 B
Actuator Boot (#13): VAG part # 02A 141 728
Cable (#6): VAG part # 357 721 335 E
-OR- US Parts (from '92 Eurovan)

Actuator: VAG part # 02B 141 708 A (comes with boot)

Here is another set of part numbers from a member on the vortex who answered a post I had there. They are almost the same with some slight variations.

"These are the parts I have got, I have yet to verify that wire is long enough
when it comes to cost and prices it's a bit different since I live in Norway and prices are expencive....these parts cost me around $300.....would guess half price in US"

The 02A has 100mm drive flanges, so you can use the 16V Scirocco 100mm axles with it. Please note that Mk2 drive axles will not fit. If all you have is 90mm CV joints, then you can swap out the flanges with your 020 transmission and use them, although they obviously will not be as sturdy as the 100mm units.

The 02J transmission will only work with 100mm driveshafts, so you cannot use your existing 90mm units with it. Keep in mind that some of the vehicles that used 020J transmissions actually used 108mm flanges, so if you happen to have one of these units, you'll have to swap for 100mm ones. The part number for the 100mm flanges is 02A 409 355D.

Any way you can check to see if its true a cable from a early eurovan will work? What is reccomended as a replacement cable?

Cable setup is easiest to find from 1,6-1,8 carbed gasser Passats from ´88-´89. At least here. I used Passat cable too. It´s a little too long, I modded the actuator lever for it. Cables can be bought from any car-parts-shop here.

Anyway, I checked for 88-89 Quantum clutch cables, (only shows AT cables

) a '90 Passat, as well as an 88 Vanagon and a '92 Eurovan.

I did find a non-self adjusting (cable) 1989 1.8L Jetta cable, part number 191 721 335M. Cost is $18/ea. The 1.6L diesel one 191 721 335AB is $45/ea. The diesel one says it's self adjusting, so perhaps it's hydraulic.

Lemme know if either of those will work...they are OEM Gemo and ATE.

self adjusting indicates cable designe, not if its hydraulic. the diesel one is still a cable.

Just an update for the clutch mechanical part that the cable attaches to.
New part # is 02B 141 708A. My cost is $120.00 from dealer.
Hope that helps in your convertions.
Also the clutch cable is NLA, but resurched over at Vortex and found that early 90's Honda CRX, Civic, and Acura integra will work and is around $30 for the cable.
