I have a few questions here. Just a quick update on my poject... 1996 (late) mk3 Golf 1.9D > TD . I have a niclely rebuilt K03 thats been sitting for months, but just won a brand new GT15 Garrett on Ebay which i would like to fit cause they make more noise.... i know they are very similar turbo's but any preferences to each turbo ? Either way i have a spare.
Engine was lifted out tonight for cleaning up and painting more than anything, could have fitted the turbo in situ but after having the whole car re-sprayed and new glass too, i just wanted a shiney black block to match.
But heres my question.... Can anyone please give me info on this new style pump pully i am faced with (its a N/A), it doesnt have a 15.7mm (i think thats the size of the old pump's dowel hole) hole in the front plate, i dont know what the locking & removing proceedure is... basically, i'm looking out for a TD pump but if i dont find one, i will re-fit the N/A pump. So, how is the timing set on these pumps... i pressume the TD has a differnt setting to the N/A, though the 'AutoData' book states the pump timing is set with a special tool, and doesnt give any specific numbers to set with a dial gauge, how would i set a TD pump then ?
Also, this car wont be driven much... maybe the odd show here or there, what should i do about the crank pully and bolt. It doesnt have the new bolt with the circular 'boss' on the end. Will i fit the new bolt with loctite.... swing on it and let it sit for a few days before starting ?
Any info is much appreciated. I want to start painting the motor ASAP, but if the pump will cause me problems, i will mask it up and leave it in place, but it will be hard to hit the head and back of the block with the pump in place.

The only special tool required is a 6mm pin about 50mm long. A long shouldered bolt with the threaded portion cut off will do nicely.

One small thing to consider: using the locking pin to time the pump works well but times the pump to the factory settings... somewhere below 1.00mm iirc. For daily use etc there's nothing wrong with the factory settings... they are just a bit conservative by most accounts... folks generally report getting better power and economy closer to 1.05mm with a standard turbo pump.
And, since you can't rotate the pump with the engine running there's no easy way to fine-tune it hill-billy style.
All this means is that you may find yourself using a dial indicator on your pump anyways....depending on your goals for this particular engine.
