Is 1/4 inch of play in the valve guides and cracks in every pre-chamber normal for a high mileage TD head?  This was a driving motor that still got 38mpg when I drove it to OK from NC a few years ago.  I was impressed it still ran..

haha.... I've never heard of one that was THAT bad. Usually all the TD's just end up with wavy cylinders and lose compression long before anything that bad can happen.

Well, this was a rebuilt head(long ago), was a real turbo head, but who knows about the rebuilder.  Bottem end probibly had 600K on it, top maybe 300K.  When you'd add oil and fire it up the first time it would go glup glup glup and smoke blue till the oil that ran past the guides wore off.
Wild...

Can you replace those prechambers?

I have a complete 1.6 head off my TD. It doesn't have the manifolds or turbo, but the head can be yours for $125.

not sure on the total mileage, but it's in great shape. It has the very small cracks btw. the valves, but nothing that you can get anything into...very tight.

It worked great on my 1.6TD until it threw a rod....through the side of the block.

Let me know if you want pics or anything and I will see what I can do for ya.

where are the cracks located in the prechambers?  I've seen those heads cracked between the valves before, and this is fine and doesn't affect the performance at all, but never seen cracked prechambers.  Maybe you can drive them out and fit new or scavenged prechambers?
