Just general info on boost

Anyone know what the standard boost pressure is on a mk2 Golf GTD?
mines only giving me 3/4 of a barr, and its as slow as hell.
also, does anyone have any idea where to start tuning up the boost side, or even just checking it for leaks?

I think 8-12 lbs is stock. I always forget.
There is an excellent writeup in the FAQ "making your 1.6 faster" or something to that tune. Read it, re-read it and go nuts

Okie dokie, ive read through the FAQ, done what it says, but all im getting is LOOOAAAADDDSSSS of pure black smoke, and its no faster than it was, could it be the turbo acting up?
the cars done just shy of 204,000 miles, is there any way i can test for problems?
boost is only at 0.75barr :?

Maybe your wastegate is stuck? Try it with the line for the actuator removed, and the boost should go up if the actuator is actually closed. That will eliminate any settings. If it's still low boost, then it's time to work on the actuator. I'd undo your mods or not drive the car until you get it worked out as you are probably getting really high EGT's with so much smoke. You do have an EGT gauge don't you? If not, GET ONE BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE!!!

Hmm, could be worth looking into getting one, but even if it does melt everything its not too bad, its not like theres a shortage of TD lumps in the shed anyway, i can always throw another engine together

i've been running my turbo with the wastegate disabled for quite some time... on a highway run i'll reconnect it because the boost spikes way too much, and in 5th gear the egt's skyrocket.
no problems so far, except quicker oil burning. with boost set to 10 psi it barely burns any.
you could try blocking off the wastegate boost, but none of us are responsible for what you do to your engine :wink: :lol: just need to exercise caution when driving and keep an eye on the amount of black smoke coming out the rear. (poor man's egt gauge :lol:) too much = high egt's = very bad. just adding boost alone will not cook your engine, unless someone set up your LDA to add more fuel past 10 psi.
for the wastegates with the solid line you'll need to cut it and then install a soft rubber line. with a soft line you can actually pinch it off with a small pair of vice grips for testing purposes...
i think maybe jimfoo doesn't want to see a TD blown because of irresponsibility, but the engines are yours to do with as you please... :cry:
