Need shopping list for 1.6td transplant
« on: March 31, 2008, 09:48:07 pm »
Hi,  I am new to these watercooled engines and need some help here.  Ask me about what engine swap and parts go in the aircooled and I can tell you.  What I am going to do to my 1.5 rabbit is put in a 1.6td.  I have look through the search and found a lot on the 1.9 swap but very little on the 1.5na to 1.6td.

Now what do I need to do to get this engine in my 1980 rabbit.  I bought a new tt down pipe 2.25".  That is about all I got so far.  Are the engine mounts the same.  How about the clutch/flywheel setup.

What are some of the hurtles that I will have when I go to install the new engine.  Would like to do this in a day, is that even possible?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks Brian

You should be good to go with the downpipe. You'll have to swap some of the sensors over from the 1.5 to the 1.6 depending on what year the 1.6 is from. Also, you might need to change the glow plugs if they are the fast ones and the 1.5 has slow ones
All the mounts are the same as long as the 1.6 came from a mk1, if not you need to swap the PS motor mount over which involves removing the pump. Actually all the mounts are different but will all bolt up to the 1.6.

Thanks Alot, that really helps me out there.  So it should be a pretty simple swap then.

yeah I wouldn't expect there to be anything tricky. It's a lot easier to do the timing belt with the engine on the ground rather then in the car.

Have a few more questions.  Where would I find the air filter and intake pipe for my project.  Will one out of a jetta work or is it rabbit specific.  Also do I need a externaloil cooler added to the front.  How about the fuel filter.  It looks like that might be in the way.  I think I can move that over to the fender.
