AAZ timing belt kit - like tdi?

I need to change my timing belt... I figure I'd just do everything and found a nice kit on gap.com --> http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Golf/Engine/290/3

Here's the question... can this kit be used with the IDI TD in my 97' Golf III?  I emailed the guys there, but they weren't very helpful... they said that I contradicted myself by saying my turbodiesel isn't a TDI... and said TDI stood for turbo diesel injection... I guess they aren't aware of the difference between the AHU and AAZ.

Anyways.. can I use this kit?

TDI is turbo direct injection, as opposed to indirect injection. No, you don't want that kit. All you have is the tensioner roller and the belt with an AAZ.

What the tensioner looks like. Prothe also sells complete kits I believe, though some people don't trust aftermarket parts, he probably has a better price.

Yes, I'm in Ottawa Canada, so I do have the AAZ TD.  I'll be getting those parts over the net... the dealer wants waaay too much money  

I think I'll do the valve gasket too as well as the alternator belt and tensioner (since there is a squeaky/chirping noise at idle)

Any other things I should do while I'm at it?  I got the car last week so I'd like to do all the maintenance that the PO might have missed.

I've had a problem starting the car for the first time after having it for a few days... it took a bit and I finally got it going... was it flooded?

It also seems to shudder sometimes when it idles... as if it was misfiring.

Hard starting is usually glow plugs, timing, compression... in about that order of likelihood.

Glowplugs are inexpensive over the net (go for Bosch Duraterms which is what most of  the net guys sell these days) so I generally just replace 'em on sight with a new vehicle, but some testing is required to ensure they are getting power ie the fuse and glowplug relay are working.

Doing the timing belt is your chance to do the timing as well.

Correctly adjusted timing and properly functioning glowplugs will resolve hard starting issues the vast majority of the time.

In terms of other maintenance.... I like to go a bit nuts when I buy a new car and replace:

- all belts
- all fluids
- all filters
- glowplugs
- glowplug fuse

Then I:

- do the timing
- refresh all the ground and large battery connections
- check the suspension system:  shocks, ball joints, control arm bushings
- check the braking system:  shoes, pads, thickness of disks, condition of drums, adjustment of emergency brake
- check all signal lights
- inspect for body / chassis rust I need to keep an eye on

With all of the above out of the way the vehicle is in a known "good" state... the counters are set to "0" so to speak... and the regular maintenance cycle can begin.

But that's just me !   The cool thing is that all of the parts listed above are cheap cheap cheap over the net, and it's kinda fun to get a big box in the mail full of fresh parts for your new  beast.

i kinda do this intentionally with every car i buy. i start stockpiling parts and then one day when someone says 'hey you bought this car last summer and you still havent done the timing belt? when was it last done?' and then i get motivated when catastrophic failure is almost for sure on the horizon. haha

autopartsonline dropped the ball on my last order so I just put an order in with importcarpartscanada. Hopefully they pull through.

BTW autopartsonline failed to notify me that everything on my order was out of stock so when I went home (from school) to work on my car I didn't have a package of parts. I had to call them. Usually they email pretty quick when ever anything you order is out of stock. So here's hoping. I know it's not a huge deal, but either way I'm not impressed
