Saw this on the vortex. Looks like a real good deal. If I knew how to swap in a 02J I would consider it strongly.

I saved a link I found on that exact question. It had a detailed write-up, what parts you needed, part numbers etc... It is on my computer at home. From what I remember, you need different motor mounts, a hydro clutch or cable operated clutch set-up. cable operated shifter system. A different speedo gear. etc.. I will try and find the link again. It looks to be almost the same as a swap for a 02A.

02a 02j into a MK2 is straightforward...a matter of mounts and parts. Thats it. Mk1 is where it is more difficult. There is lots of information out there but really...its almost "bolt in"

Got a run down on those parts? I was wondering what the additional parts would run? I thought I read somewhere that the fly wheel for these was pretty expensive-dual mass?

it has a nice tall final drive too... might be acceptable on a diesel

'rado or passat style clutch/accel pedal assembly, master/slave bracket from 'rado/passat, clutch master, clutch slave, b3 or 'rado front tranny/motor mount. Cable shift box with cables. then its the installation from there. MK2 has the holes in the firewall for mounting the bits... the biggest part of the install would be the cable shift box and removing the old linkage style setup, etc.

Flywheel isn't an issue. Any 'rado/b3 16v one will work nicely as long as it does not come from a VR6.

Is it true you can also go the route of a manual clutch cable? I thought I read a g60 flywheel would work as well.
Have you done a swap like this before?

Yes...you can get the euro clutch cable setup for the 02a...then there are a variety of items that you do not need...

The g60 flywheel is the "rado" flywheel I was talking about....from a corrado g60. It is the same as the 16v passat flywheels as well. Common upgrade for the TDI's as well.

Yes...I have done this swap 3 times now and a auto to standard swap in my 'rado as well.

the swap into an MK1 is pretty straight forward, Mine is a little bit of a hack job but it was pretty easy, keep your axles and get 100 mm cvs, different trans mount (or modified 5 speed ff mount in my case) different clutch and pressure plate set up, modified rear trans mount and the cable shifter box bolted in, the biggest thing is getting the clutch hardware and cable shift box for the right trans, I had a VR6 box at first and has a different pattern so I didnt have reverse.

love the cable shift over the old linkage.

It appears that the swap into the mk1 is a bit difficult. The mk2 should be easier. I am hoping that someone who has done this swap in the past, or has good knowledge of it will do up a "How To" in the FAQ section. It looks like a very good upgrade if you are going to be pushing quite a bit more HP over stock. I will look online and see if I can get a parts list and poss. part numbers for the swap. It will be a start.
