Just bought a high milage 95' Passat TD and looking for info
« on: March 25, 2008, 06:07:40 pm »
Ihave just bought my first VW diesel and like my other VWs this one has high milage.  The engine has 360k on it and it has checked out with the pre mechanical. The previous owners serviced the vehical well, but things come up with old VWs and I am wondering what are some of the more common problems with these AAZ engines.   So far it seems like the crank and injector pump are two of the most common.  How hard is it to find parts and are there any good sources for parts on the eastern side of the continent or closer to Atlantic Canada. Any other Tips or info would be handy.  Cheers.

Id say check the head gasket for leaks that will likely lead to pressurized coolent or oil in the coolent

3 of the 4 diesels Ive had since last year around this time have had blown or running on last strings head gaskets at 300+ kms.

Ip's leak due to low sulfer in todays diesel fuel...
chasis will need tie rods, wheel bearings and so on so forth

Anyone got anymore?

360 isn't that high, I'd say closer to average.

It could be perfectly fine or could be problematic depending on how it was maintained.

Glow plugs would be the first thing I would check. Then if the injectors are original they need to be tested/replaced. The timing belt and tensioner needs to be replaced if you don't know when it last was.
