idle too low when start up(with movie)
« on: March 23, 2008, 12:06:25 pm »
hello

i have been messing with the cold start mechanism to try to low my idle in order to increase the fuel but after that when cold my idle stays to low...
750rpm and the engine shaking too much but after a while it rises to the normal 1000rpm...

what could this be?

also what is the proper way to adjust the cold start lever as i want to check my timing and dont know if that is properly adjsuted(i messed with the bolts on the side/top)

have you properly adjusted your residual fuel quantity screw? (the idle stop screw)...if that is incorrectly adjusted it could give a variance in idle.

To set it...screw it in until idle just barely increases and lock in place...as for the proper adjustment on the cold start lever adjustment i'm pretty sure there is no "standard" adjustment, all depends if your governor is set correctly (proper load on the idle spring/fuel screw)

sounds like one cylinder might not be firing properly.  that would cause a low idle and some shaking.

one way is to loosen the injector line nut going to the injectors one at a time.  if the idle lowers, then that injector is fine.  if nothing changes then that injector (or cylinder) isn't firing properly.  if it goes away after a few minutes, it could be a bad glow plug.

I'd say. How old are your injectors?

Can you hear an increase in idle? The way the tach moved looked more like the belt was slipping and giving a false reading

no,the idle just stays low.
it increases slowly but the tacho goes up at the same time.

the injectors are gtd bodies with merc 261 nozzles set to 155 bar, nozzles have less that 6 months and 2 month ago i checked the opening pressure and was ok...

the engine is a solid lifter n/a converted to turbo,i thouth that it would clatter more because of that...

true... solid lifter will definitely clack more.

in my experience with both GTD's and regular TD nozzles, i would have to say that the GTD's felt good on the butt dyno... much better than the regular TD's.  i couldn't accurately measure my mpg before because of some really bad tires, but now hopefully my mileage will increase some.

sounds like your running with no wastegate

its quite the rush pulling 35psi of boost in these motors...

too bad they are so gutless at higher rpm, well at least mine is haha

sounds like perhaps a fuel screw adjustment is needed...raise the idle and increase max boost
