SIDE EXIT EXHAUST
« on: March 23, 2008, 05:56:13 am »
Im planning on removing my exhaust when I put my turbo on and I noticed many people going the "SIDE EXIT EXHAUST" route

I was hoping someone could be kind enough to post a pic of theres (under the car to see where the pipes lay and how you kept it from swingin (ie hangers and where to put them so OPP doesnt pull me off the road

I also hear going the turbo route most of you dont even have a muffler because turbo cuts the noise....

Can someone post there opinions on this and should I be going that road if I wanted to drive my car everyday?  I have 2.5 inch pipe in my garage just needs to be welded up

I saw this video, im not sure where i got it, But I was wondering if RabbitGTIguy could help out here....

Don't know about side exit, (haven't tried it on a volks) but the no muffler/resonator thing is fine. My 1.9 in a '92 jetta is fairly quiet with pretty much stock setup minus muffler and resonator. You can hear the turbo a little better, and it's a little louder when you're pushing it hard, but not loud enough to be a problem. Most people don't believe it's straight through.

Side exit on my truck just ahead of the back wheel works fine (354 perkins in a crew cab GMC pickup) but I'm pretty sure it would be quieter in the cab with a rear exit exhaust system.

I am infact drooling on my computor over those pics of your perfectly crafted truck. Im jelous no doubt, say what size are those wheels?

Nice ride height and body works remarkable//
im way shorter than you..you must really hurt your back on trani pulls without a trans jack...heh

Id like to see some under shots, just to know how to route the pipes...

You used the original rubber holder? whered the bend start and did you put one on both sides? That must be so nice under the trailing arm area not having all that extra piping, just kinda makes sense

any route if someones got a pic of the underside of there car with side exit, id really be greatful to see it
thanks a lot blackboostedtruck   damn nice work you've done there
props

he he your funny Base! thanks for the compliment!
it hurt's my back just getting in and out of that damn thing!
well it will be awhile till i can get some shots of the underneath! once you get old like me you become a packratt and i have tons of crap around the truck and a bunch of snow still outside!
i did buy a lot of mandrelbends and just kinda cut, tack welded, as i went! kinda sorta planed and trial by error i just made it work? the hangers i used the cut up tire ones that you buy at the auto parts store! you can post my pics. of my truck in this thread if you like? the rims are 15x7.5 i like those better than 17" well thats all i can think of take's me along time to type!
thanks Duane

I put a bush-burner on my jetta, I used all the stock mounts and then 45 it behind the rear wheel, so that is comes out behind the rear wheels at an angle, maybe in the near future I'll put duals on it.

IF you wanted to exit befor the rear wheels you have to make sure you clear the water seperator on the one side and the brake controller on the other. also custom mounts would have to be made, you could probably either bolt or self tap thenm to the underside.

project 1.6 liter in the works  :)

BlackBoostedTruck's well.......truck and message regarding the "Side exit Exhaust!"

They prolly wont show how i did it? but gives an idea of where it ended up at!
it's made out of 2.5 stainless and is all tig welded it will only come  apart at the flex pipe!  and one  hanger in  the center at the "Y" i wanted a hanger at the tips but haven't done that! universal hangers seem to work well?

Sorry, no pics.  But I simply cut off the downpipe just after it entered the tunnel and bumped up to 2.5" and ran that back to the cross-tunnel just in front of the rear axle, hugging the passenger side to clear the shift linkage.  Turned it 90deg. and bumped it up again to 3" out to the "end" of the cross-tunnel where I added a 45deg elbow so it exits just in front of the rear wheel.  We'll see if it passes inspection in this state.  As far as hangers go I used those cheap rubber & strapping ones and screwed in two lags on each to keep them from moving/turning.

I'd take pictures, but it's an ugly job and the exhaust system has more hardware holding it together than my engine does.     At least it whistles at idle and roars on the boost.
