No boost
« on: March 15, 2008, 04:34:22 pm »
I just finished installing a 1.6 Turbo motor and turbo from a 1986 Jetta into a 1981 VW Pickup.  The motor has been sitting for at least 10 years, last plates on the pickup were 1991.  I had a tough time getting the engine to start but finally started by pull starting.  There is a constant woosh when motor is running and which I believe to be coming from a leak where I welded the downpipe to the rest of the exhaust.  Truck terribly lacks power-might reach 40 MPH in a mile.  I installed a  pressure guage with a vaccum T in the line that runs from intake manifold to injection pump-no pressure at anytime from 1st to third gear under full throttle.  I blocked the exit for the pop off valve and the corresponding whole in the intake and test drove again-still no boost pressures-any suggestions? Bad turbo? Thanks,Brian

Did you check the turbo while the engine was out?
Did it spin freely?

Check the lines going to the LDA. I had mine burst once so I had no boost. It would just leak out of the hole.

Turbo did spin freely while motor was out, did not seem to have excessive wear or play
