So, my starter finally died on me.. the solenoid just finally gave up, motor on the starter still turns though...
Thing is, brought an extra starter with me to replace and kind of figured after removing the top and bottom transmission bolts (it's a 3 bolt setup; 2 to the transmission, and one to the motor mount) that the starter is a 2 bolt.. kind of slapped myself in the face and i hacked it back together and had someone else help me popstart'er...
but on the way home I lost the bottom bolt to the transmission, and then lost the top bolt to the transmission right before I got home.. pretty lucky if you ask me but I have no clue what part #s they are, and i've looked through ETKA and the bentley.. i'm a little stumped here, can anyone point me to the right direction?
Junk yard
Add your location to your profile. I'm sure I'm not the only one with 30 of these bolts kicking around (they are all locked up at my grampas though unfortunately)
the bolt size is 10X140 mm allen head
just buy a 12.9 bolt - I had lost both too - so I just got them from the hardware store
The allen bolts are on the mk1s. These ones should be hex head. I have a couple of the long ones in my room I could mail you but they are the allen head style
yeah - the original ones were 12 point head - but I lost them so I just bought a couple of allen head ones. work great
I've never seen the 12pt ones, crazy VWs

For both? I know the lower part of the transmission for the starter was a much longer bolt and the top was a little shorter..
BTW; no diesels in the junkyards around here really.. much of a troop to get anything out of MA for diesels, ive been scrounging for new parts just in case lately. Just all gassers around here, and I bet the bolt pattern is different also..
in my experiences any mk1's gasser or diesels all have the same size bolts holding the starter to the front mount to the engine
I dont think much happend when you remove the front mount as far as engine support, SHe still has the two side mounts and the rear trani one
Ive driven miles without those bolts till i tried to crank once and grind grind grind. but the engine didnt sag or move much,,,,mk1's
the MK2 starter is actually a part of the mount assy.
The actual size is 135mm - but 5 mm doesnt matter - its not going into a blind hole now is it.
nothing biggie - just go buy a couple from a hardware store.
