Is this crank forged or cast?
« on: March 13, 2008, 09:45:47 pm »
Hi, I've got one of those new 1.9s from Vanamania.  I'm trying to tell if the 95.5 mm crank that it has is forged or cast.  I've read on Vortex that one way to tell is to look at the width of the seams.  They said if they're very thin, then it's cast, but if they're wider than 1/8" then it's forged.  As you can tell, the seams on this crank are at least 1/4" inch wide.  I'm 99.9% sure it's the same crank that is in the 1Z/AHU.  It is part number 028 105 263 D.  The engine was supposedly built in 2004.  Does anybody have any ideas?

I am sure that this crank is a forged unit.

Hi, is that because of the way the seams look, or some other knowledge specific to this crankshaft?

Hi, yes it is the way the seam is, like they said, a cast crank has a very narrow seam where the two half of the mold fit together, another give away is that with a cast crank, the surface looks more like the inside of your block casting. You can see the grains of the casting sand in it.
If you would clean the crank around the # 4 conrod you would see a blue color from the heat treating process  that is only used on steel crankshafts.

Cool!  Thanks for the reply.  I'll have to go out and look for those things.
