There's an interesting thought!  An air cooled turbo charged engine.    Proper warm up and shut down procedures just became even more important.

How about an air cooled V12 engine?

If you ever want to see something impressive off-road, do a you tube search for tatra t813 and check out the truck trials.

I thought it was really interesting. I'll have to look at that other link as well. Not tonight though...need to head to bed. The time change is messing with me :)

Anyways...
On the VW aircooled diesel...I just found it AMAZING that the air-cooled system did indeed provide enough cooling for the diesel. They say it right in the article... pretty amazing... good ole' aircooleds...

Why so amazed. The German Deutz diesels and all aircooled and have been around for years (still being used in a big way).

Well, there is a slight chance you might be seeing an aircooled VW diesel once again- check here:

Interesting thread, and Jake Raby, the famed type IV aircooled engine builder may be taking this little project on.  Has not been updated in a while but Raby has the money and the resources to do it.  When it all boils down to it, there really isnt a whole lot that really needs changed.

It's not that amazing when you think that diesels produce less heat than gassers.
