   How do I tell if our (Dec.'84)1985Golf is a MK1 or MK2?

• very simple: look at the taillights, if they are square its a mk1
  
  here is how they look like on a mk1
  
  
  
  
  if the look like this
  
  
  
  then it´s a mk2
  
  also from side view the mk1 has more sharp edges picture here

• If its a Golf its a Mk2...Mk1's are called rabbits in north america
