Air in my fuel line, small tank/filter leaking fuel
« on: March 03, 2008, 01:28:57 pm »
Hi, I have an 89 jetta with a 1.6 diesel, still strong after 347,000 miles  :D

The last owner overtightened the cap and broke it
whats this tank/filter called? where do I get a new one.

also I have air bubbles in my fuel line, think it's from the leak?

Here is a video of the tank location and the air bubbles

Water separation tank. Usually leaks. Most owners get rid of them due to better diesel these days.

I actually have the same problem with air bubbles in my project car. I don't have as serious the air bubbles but they are there. I don't have any leaks though but still unsure of whats making the air bubbles?
Any ideas here guys?

Make sure that all of your hose fittings/ connections are all tight. From the video, it looks like the air bubbles are coming from the filter housing connections? I'd try removing the fuel line from the water seperator and submerging it in a bottle of fuel and checking if it's still got bubbles. It's just a matter of finding the leaking fitting or connection.
 Just my 2-cents. Thanks, Josh

The water separator is no longer available from VW... and anything you find is probably in about the same shape.

Most people happily delete them... diesel these days is much more reliable as well.
