Electric Fuel Pump
« on: March 02, 2008, 11:20:02 am »
I picked up another Audi 5000 Turbo Diesel for my next project, and it had something on the engine I wasn't familiar with.  Between the injector pump and the fuel filter was an electric fuel pump.  The owner said he had only started the car once, but the fuel pump had to be running.  Were these standard on 1983 cars, or does this indicate problems with the injector pump?

Electric pump not needed

Hey

you're right the electric pump does indicate a problem with the internal
pump of the VE injection pump. if it won't suck fuel from the tank
then the blades inside the VE are most likley stuck. it's not a good
idea to run it like this.

sounds like a problem with the pump or fuel lines

using additional lift pump in tank is bad?

no, he means it dont suck, but it probably also dont make pressure, so your dynamic timing advance is not good anymore, that will result in a retarted timing when the revs go up    a lift pump is no problem as long it dont make high pressures

OK,
So what is a good pressure range for the lift pump?
Also, does this make the IP last longer (not have to work as hard)?
Are there performance advantages with it or fuel milage advantages?
Any preferred brands to look for?

you dont NEED a lift pump, the internal pump dont need to work so hard, there is probably also less friction on the shaft, but i dont believe this is a great difrence, other say, a difrence is a difrence (for those who run a TDI with 12mm)
I think a pump from 1a2bar or less is good.
