Is there an AF engine code? Specs?
« on: February 28, 2008, 07:37:01 pm »
Hey,
My friend is looking at an 84 Jetta that has a 1.9 turbo diesel motor in it. I asked the owner what the engine code was on it and all he could find were two letters AJ. Does that mean anything to anybody? Horsepower and torque specs?
Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

Though an '84 probably wouldn't have a TDI. What does the valve cover look like?

Like that? (except not green  ) If so, that is an AAZ. If it is like that but one side is scalloped to clear the injectors, it's a TDI.

Somebody transplanted the engine. He couldn't find the code, AJ was all he could find.

I can't seem to find any AJ engine code, VW or Audi. AJ something else, but not just AJ. You didn't answer the valve cover question.

Haven't seen the car or the engine yet. Just talking to my buddy on the phone, and talked to the kid who owns it. He doesn't know much, couldn't find the engine code. When the car was in Colorado the owner had his Mercedes mechanic friend install a Canadian spec 1.9 turbo motor that was bought from The Parts Place in Michigan. Thats all I know right now. Will be driving to see the car Sunday. The kid says that on a cold day, cycles the glow plugs once, cranks about three seconds and it starts. Sounds like glow plugs and compression is good. I don't think a compression test is necessary.
Can't think of anything else right now.

The engine is very probably an AAZ then.
