Just picked up a replacement 1.6 motor last night for the caddy (decided not to mess with the piston damage in the other one) and I noticed that the engine's block is painted GREEN.

Odd. I tried doing some research and some say that this was factory and might possibly indicate a rebuilt engine. Anyone have a green block or know what that means? Maybe the PO just painted it himself.

if you want to know the condition of the engine (ie was it rebuilt, how good is it) the easiest way to do that is to check compression in all cylinders. You'll need four new heat shields and an adapter for the gauge to do this. You can make an adaptor out of an old injector body. I believe they should have 435psi in them? It's always nice to know how much compression your motor has, for those cold winter mornings when you are late for work, forgot to plug in the block heater, and are praying that it will start......

Not really... Almost every VAG engine (gas) I've seen / worked on in this part of the country has either been:
1. Flaky, rusty orange
2. Road grunge valve cover leak black

The green is kind of a cool touch.

So...when you say early factory, does that mean they only did it on the early diesels in the A1's or only certain years?

The block in the picture looks great, btw.

What are those return lines made out of on that green motor? Plastic? My lines are still leaking. Looking to replace them with something that's a little tighter at the ends

Looks like that might be air brake line. Nice stuff to work with, and a common replacement for top end oil lines on *Norton* bikes.

Looks like air brake lines to me also. I use it on mine and it works great. Easy to get as well from the local truck repair shop. Like most it is one time use.

All of mine are green, except 1.9's

I use a color between John Deere (too Yellow) and Forest Green (too green) I just happened to have something laying around that worked (I'm in econo mode, as wife just opened last month's visa bill :evil: )
parts for 4 rebuilds !!! + 6 new tires for my bulldozer trailer :oops:

Canadian factory rebuilds are green too, so someone has to have the correct color :idea:

A buddy of mine has a 91 non turbo and the block and head are painted light blue. What does that mean?

Sounds like someone rebuilt the engine....or maybe just did a Krylon rebuild.

I got it used (free!) from a friend of mine. Unknown mileage, but it looked pretty clean.

I spent Friday afternoon pulling the CR engine in the truck and prepping the replacement to go in. I "assumed" this green engine was a 1.6 like the one the truck had in it... but after we cleaned the stamping area, I discovered it's a CK engine (1.5 liter...we've codenamed it "the suck")

I'm still putting it in, but at the time my buddy joked that driving the caddy with a 1.5 diesel in it will be "payback" for all those years I've tried to make VW gas engines go faster!

I hope this thing won't be_that_gutless. Oh well...should be only temporary until I can get the TD together.

Oh, it's going to be slow... I drive an NA 1.6 caddy every day and damn is it slow. I love my gas cars too, it's just that the diesel is so economical. My Rabbit gets sub 20 mpg...so the ~40 mpg is really nice in daily commuting. Besides, in my eyes it's just something different to mess with. Here is my gasser:

It's currently undergoing reconstructive surgery after it melted a piston (oops) and getting an Air/Water intercooler which should solve the problem that killed it in the first place. After I get the wideband on it I expect to get it to put down another 10-20 whp. I also just splurged for some H&R coilovers so it's about an inch lower than in that picture.
