Did I use the wrong MC?
« on: February 21, 2008, 09:12:52 am »
I had asked before as to what MC to use,
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=11773&highlight=

I ordered one up from the local parts guy. He SAID it was a 4 port, but turned out to be a 6 port.
I was told they were the same and would work, I'd just have to plug up some ports.

Plugged 2 ports and installed it. Drove home across the highway then stopped at home for an hour.
Headed out to hockey and everything was good for 15 to 20 mins. On the highway the car started to slow down. The brake(s) was stuck on (I think just the front right caliper) and was getting harder and harder the further I pushed it.

sat on the side of the road waiting for CAA and after about 20 minutes, the car was rolling more freely.

So after waiting for an hour and CAA told me another 30 ~ 45 minutes, I said F it and drove it off. It was moving fine. I could still feel it grabbing a *bit* but not too much.

Got it home driving at about 60km the whole way.

Still seems to be grabbing a bit but not as much.

Is this indicative of me using the incorrect sized MC?

Keep in mind that this thing drove fine with no issues up until that point, and even now drives moderately well.

I was told the only difference between gassers and diesels would be the european gassers have 6 ports, with the 2 UNTAPPED ports on the NA MC's being tapped for the high/low pressure switches.

that almost sounds like a seizing up caliper...?

Yes, but i believe (from what someone has suggested) that is happening is that the push rod on the booster is pushing in too far and putting pressure on the first port, which is the front right caliper.

If the push rod is too long and applying pressure it should be doing it to all the brakes equally (relative to their size). This is AFAIK and may not actually be accurate though

Can you unblock one of the other ports and use it? As mentioned on vortex it might be a bad port/seal

When it doing this are your brake lights on?

I guess it still could be a stuck caliper.

One way to tell would be to apply pressure (jack it up) then release the bleeder on that caliper. I believe if that releases the pressure it's not a caliper problem as in the pistons would still stick if there was no pressure.
This would tell you its either the master or a bad line.
