What Would You Buy For your Car/Engineif You were in Europe
« on: February 21, 2008, 06:38:59 am »
I'm going to Italy this Saturday. I was wondering if there are any items that are good to look for that are worth the effort of seeking out while there. Of course it has to fit in the suitecase. Exchange rate sucks but was wondering if there are items still worth it. I'm putting an ALH into my 98 Wolfy Jetta. I really like the 4 headlight grill. Was wondering if they could fit and would be cheaper to bring back.

Turned up Cummins 4BTA in 1985 Dodge Ram W150.
MK3 Wolfsburg Jetta getting a ALH Tdi, chip upgrade, Volvo fmic, 0.206 injectors.

Good idea.
I'm back from the Venice, Italy  area but should be going back again in November. BTW, saw a Tdi Tiguan in the parking lot of the company that I was visiting. Got photos of what we may never see here unless VW of America wakes up and smells the coffee.
I still have not heard from anyone as to what is a good buy over there or hard to get here.

Don't even think about bringing a car back from Europe.

First of all you have to pay for shipping and customs.  Think of $1000 as a minimum.  Then there are importers here that you have to use, and they want a cut.

But if the engine isn't certified by the EPA here, forget it.

And there are minor differences in safety standards that might have to be dealt with.

And with the price of the Euro, the cars aren't cheap.

At one point I wanted a 96-99 Mercedes E300 diesel wagon.  In the US, they have the 96-99 E300 Sedan and the E320 gas wagon, but no diesel wagon.  I believe that I could have imported the car, but it wouldn't have been worth it.

You are better off importing an engine from Europe.  The same rules apply, but as long as you don't have a hole lot of engines, they let the EPA unapproved engine clear customs.

myke_w,  we all drool about the cars over in Europe.  I thought that if I could import the 1.2 TDI Lupos into this country that I would make a killing.  I still think that, but it's just too much work.

Prothe,
If one could pack a container with known good complete 3 and 4 cylinder tdi motors, I'd be willing to bet he could sell every last one of them.
My interest is in smaller parts though, like Fratelli Bosio TDI injector nozzles, KS 1.9 TD pistons, OE 1.7 heads, k14 turbos, injections pumps, PD engine parts including cams and injectors, bigger vnt turbos, etc.

Bringing cars in is a pain, that's no lie, and re origination is almost impossible unless the vehicle is older than 25 years.
