1.6td swap into b3 wagon?
« on: February 20, 2008, 01:44:58 pm »
I'm pretty sure I remember reading about 1.6td b3 wagons in europe, but there were never any in north america, correct?

Seems like the swap is pretty straightforward and all.  Is the car too heavy to actually drive it with the td?  Anyone around here done it at all?  A few people on the tex have done it and report good results.

that's one of my thoughts.  I love my rabbit, but do get a little tired of the old interior.  I know, I could make it nicer, but a minimal interior like that fits the car well.  It doesn't need to be, nor should it be really nice.  I wouldn't put an na in if I did, it'd for sure be a td.

The wreck I got my 1.6TD from was a B3 actually. It had been swapped in there sometime in its life. It looked like it would have been a pretty easy swap. I know I didnt have to change much to put it in my mk2. The passat had an O2A trans with cable shift/hyd clutch so the flywheel and clutch would have to changed over to the O2A style. Mine also had a different alt bracket for mounting the passat AC and power steering. Thats about it I think, other than the regular gas to diesel swap stuff.

wifey has a b4 passat wagon vr auto[barf] and i've always thought once we can afford to upgrade her that i would swap a diesel into the wagon.

i dunno how much more the b4 weighs than a mk3 but they were diesel so it cant be all bad right?

I drove (built) a mk3 with a 1.6TD and it wasn't too bad. It had really tall gears so I had to be going pretty quick before I could get into 5th. I'd imagine it weighs the same if not more then a B3 wagon

How tall of gears?  Did you use an 02a or whatever, or make an 020 fit?  If 020, what code?  If 02a or whatever, what would've had tall gears?  A tdi trans?

Any vids or anything of it at all?  Was it faster or slower than a NA mk1?

It was an AAZ before the swap so it had an 020. The code was CHD
3.67    3.45    1.94    1.29    0.91    0.75

It's been a few years since I drove my rabbit, which was fast to me but I think the MK3 was faster. I'm sure cruising on the highway above 100 was fine, but 90 was right around the shift point. Pretty high RPM in 4th but too low in 5th to make it up any incline without smoking everything out

No videos and it has since been torn apart due to excessive oil consumption

EDIT actually the mk3 was definitely faster

Ok.  I was just wondering if it'd be this unbearable monster or not.  Sounds sort of like my na- any incline requires 4th.

Sounds like I'll go ahead with it, if I end up buying a passat for sale locally.

my buddy built one and loves it.. he can cruise all day at 80 no problem with his td..

I say go for it..

Only prerequisite is that it had a 16v in it and not a vr6

not sure on k frame.. I think a arms are wider - like mk3 jetta, axles are longer like mk3.. think about shifter assemblies, because on a vr they'd be cable, and clutch pedal assy, cause that would be hydraulic on vr..

So basically, the easiest car to swap into is a 16v, not saying it can't be done, but I can tell you it will be more difficult and expensive..
