hi there
ive just fitted a 1Z tdi engine into my mk2 golf, but am a bit disapointed with the perfomance at the mo.
i am not using the boost pressure solinoids etc, and my engine is fitted with a mechanical diesel pump from an AAZ lump. so my lack of boost is probably down to this, i was told by another forum member that i could fit a boost gauge onto my car and adjust the actuator rod for more boost
(around 14psi was recommended).
i had a look at the turbo on my engine and it does not seem to have the adjustable bar for the actuator,
had a look on ebay and found a few AAZ engines which have turbo's with adjustable actuators, but im guessing that a turbo from anAAZ engine will not solve the problem
is there any other way of upping the boost, or maybe another turbo that i can buy which has an adjustable actuator?
i can hear the turbo working when im driving, but there is not as much power as there should be.
any help or advice will be much appreciated.
thanks

You can put one of the bleed type devices on. You cut the line to the actuator, put a tee in, then hook an adjustable bleed to the tee. That way the turbo doesn't see as much boost as it is actually producing. And you will obviously want to turn the fuel up after you increase the boost.

Well, there are several options, many on e-bay. The cheap route is to get an air valve for an aquarium. Just tee into the line between the turbo and wastegate, run tube into the car from the tee, and hook the valve to it so you can adjust it as you drive. Note, the tee and tube need to be able to handle very hot air. Vinyl tube is out as are most plastic tees.

Sorry if this is a dummy question: you are already using TDI camplates with your AAZ pump - right ?

hi there
i am using an aaz mechanical diesel pump on my 1Z engine, otherwise i would of had to source a 1Z ecu and wiring loom, which i did not have at the time the engine was installed.
what do you mean by "camplates"

An actual M-TDI pump will give you more power as it should have a bigger head and the TDI cam plate. There are several threads on here on them, and they don't need the ECU.

hi there,
thanks for the info.
been looking for the threads that you mentioned but cant seem to find them.
if the above is correct then i guess i wont bother fitting the 1Z diesel pump, ecu and loom etc.
but need some more info on what i can do with my m tdi to get more power.

Hi,
your problem with yout stock AAZ (IDI) pump in your 1Z (DI) engine is, that the AAZ injectors open at 155bar and have max. fuel pressure about 400bar. You 1Z DI injectors needs higher fuel pressure and a other characteristic of fuel pressure floating.
The cam plate is in the fuel pump behind the HP-plunger and is responsible for the axial movement of the hp plunger. The DI and IDI cam plates have different characters, so your DI injectors will not prober work with a stock IDI pump, never mind of the boos level.

But your pump can be modified to work with the TDI injectors, though it is probably best to have someone knowledgeable do the work as to do it right, quite a few things need changing. At the very least, a larger head will help with your AAZ cam plate if it is a later pump.

i see
its starting to make sence now,
there was always a little voice in the back of my head telling me that its more than just playing with the boost.
any idea on what exactly needs to be done to my aaz pump for it to work correctly on the 1Z engine,
would also appreciate it if someone could recommend somewhere that can do the necessary work. or if someone on the forum can do it, i will gladly pay them for there time.
its only recently that i have chosen to walk the diesel path, even though my dad has been telling me for years..
i hate to admit it, but he was right.
sods law that the time i decided to convert my golf from petrol to diesel, the fuel prices are now stupidly high :x

Actually with your AAZ pump, if you have the stock injector also, It do not deliver much power, At 20PSI turbo I estimate around 80 maybe 90HP and a lot of smoke if you give more fueling on the pump.
A proper Pump + 216 nozzle with only 14-15psi of boost is able to burn the tire very easy when you bounce the accelerator in a golf mk2 in second gear.

hi there
when you say "a proper pump + 216 nozzle" do you mean the 1Z pump and 1Z injectors, or a modified AAZ pump using 1Z injectors?
i have been told that without using the boost pressure solinoid, my turbo is currently delivering around 10psi of boost, and due to using a stock AAZ pump on a 1Z engine, the injectors are not getting enough pressure.
these are the two problems that i need to sort out to get some more power from my engine (more boost and correct fuel pressure).
once i can establish how to overcome these problems, im sorted.
but due to this being my first ever tdi conversion, im a bit stuck :?
