As some of you may know, i bought an 81 rabbit diesel about 2 or 3 months ago... it had its usual rabbit issues (mostly electrical), but i got most of them fixed (the important ones anyway)... well i decided it was a little too boring to drive because it was a 4 speed manual, so about a month ago i swapped it for an FK with a .71 5th gear... it was more fun, and a bit more responsive, but it still needed something... IT WAS TOO DAMN SLOW!!!
so..............
i decided to slap a turbo on that ***...
parts needed for the build:
-K14 TD turbo
-misc. piping
-air filter
-oil lines
-oil pan
-boost gauge
-down pipe - $200 for everything listed so far (i got a deal)...
-MK2 TD intake manifold - $40 shipped
-EGT gauge - ~$50
-EGT probe - ~$30
the necessities:
the motor before:
first we removed the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and stock d.p....
then we put the new intake manifold on...
then we attatched the turbo...
test fitting the elbow...
after this, we took off the old oil pan and scraped off the old gasket (ugh!)... we used a gasser oil filter flange and put the oil feed line on the top hole (sorry, no pics of that)... we then attatched the old oil pan and the oil return line... after that we put on the downpipe... now its time to get the gauges working...

looks like you are still running NA injector pump?
I ask because I'm debating putting a NA pump on my TD long enough to get a giles rebuilt TD pump. -

o yea... question...
my EGT's are hitting a maximum of 1200F... could i increase my fuel? if so how much?? -

it runs just fine, its just not nearly as fast as it would be with a TD pump... i like it tho... -

I'd be careful to increase fuel too much. Perhaps look into a washerfluid injection system? (homemade methanol/water injection system)

what about running an oil cooler just between the oil filter flange and the turbo so that the turbo gets cooled a lot?? or would that make the oil too cool to protect the turbo?? thanks for any info...

putting on an i.c. this weekend and turning up the boost... do i have to have a boost controller or is there a way to adjust the waste-gate??

I don't think that would make any significant for EGT's, if that's what you're thinking. Cooling the center section of the turbo won't cool the exhaust gasses. Probably obvious and not answering your question. But I don't think you can cool the oil too much to protect the turbo. I would say anything above 150 degrees or so would be safe for the turbo. If you were talking 30 degree oil I think that would be a problem.

yea.. i wasnt trying to lower EGT's.. just keep the turbo cooler... any idea on the wastegate question? -

We are only about 10 days apart on our TD builds! Trust me, it's fun with a lot of fuel. Just one major problem: I'm now in the middle of a head gasket replacement. I did a top-speed run on Saturday morning and blew it. :oops:
Time for a 3-notch HG & head studs. -

You'll want to put something on that valvecover vent hole. I capped mine with one from NAPA. I think it ran me about $7.

no your right, it does need to breath... but i would recommend some sort of air breather at least to prevent oil spray everywhere

It still steams, but the oil spray is gone from the firewall. I just cut a short section of 3/4" ID heater hose to connect the two stubs. -

so are you just running what ever stock boost is?
Have you adjusted your IP at all?
I think i may have to do this if i can find a set-up at the junk yard.... if i can turbo my gasser for $300, i be i can do this for $100
