New to me - General - VWDiesel.net The IDI, TDI, and mTDI source.

• 1st post, I just picked up an '82 diesel Rabbit for $450. Fires up quick, runs. Needs a right axle shaft, no big deal. Already got the axle nut off, those are 6mm allen on the inside? Tried with one of those small allen wrenches but it felt like it wanted to strip out, so I'll pick up a 6mm 3/8 drive socket type and try that. Any tricks taking out the axle shaft?
  
  So is $450 a good deal? 196,000 miles, 5 speeder? Its been sitting awhile, but like I said, it fired right up after the glow plug light went out.

• Those inner bolts should be 12 point internal wrenching fasteners. 8mm, i think. An allen key will bugger it up for sure. I find it easiest to use an impact gun with a long extension through the wheelwell.

  Is that a Torx or Allen?, its hard to look up in there.
  
  12 point kinda sounds like a torx deal.

• wierd thing:
  haynes manuel I bought says: "8mm allen" on the inner axle bolts.
  
  Sometime I don't like those Haynes deals. Of course the first thing I try is the 8 mil allen.

  That's why you get the Bentley manual.    Bentley's are the VW owner's bible.  I read parts of mine just about every week before my "Rocco wrenching weekends."  
  
  Also, a tip on those inner bolts, make sure there isnt any road grime or greasy crap in the heads of them, it will make the 12-point not seat completely in the head and it will strip real easy.  Then there is lots of cussing involved.   :?

• Well, it's not completely wrong.  The early rabbits did indeed use 8mm Allen heads.  I think VW started using the triple squares when mechanics started showing up at the front gates with torches looking for the head of the man who was putting in those easily strippable bolts in inaccessable places.
  
  I'll take Lord V's advice a step further.  Use a hammer to firmly tap the key into the bolt head.  The deeper it goes, the better bite it will have.

• The axle is changed, 5 bolts were triple square, one was allen.
