Swain tech group buy
« on: February 08, 2008, 10:51:02 am »
I will post this in the for sale section as well.

I spoke to a rep at Swain tech coatings about discounts for group buys from auto clubs etc..  He said they would offer a 10% discount if the total for the work sent in came out to at least $1,000.   I am going to be sending in my pistons for coating.  Looking at the gold coat and pc-9.  It is going to cost me a bit over $200.  Anyone else have anything they want to send in?  Any of you cross post in other groups who may want to send stuff in?  It adds up quick.

Subsonic,
Are we talking ceramic coat here?

EDIT: Duh

Do they have a rule of thumb price per surface area covered?

Here is a link for information:

http://www.swaintech.com/

They have different prices for different coatings and different auto parts.
It does not look like they break it down by sq inches covered, but by piece.

Here is a list of prices I boosted from there site.  Looks like a set of pistons would run about $128 bucks plus shipping to get ceramic coating on the tops, and polymoly on the skirts.  These guys are located in NY state.  They seem to have a pretty good rep.  Cant say if they are better than anyone else, but they have been around for a while, and I could not find any negitive comments on them on line.

I asked the rep about the diesel piston prices.  I explained that I was talking about IDI pistons and not TDI.  He was pretty sure the IDI cost would be under the standard automotive piston cost.

Automotive Coatings Price Sheet

Prices assume disassembled, clean “standard” parts in good condition. Used
parts can be coated, but a cleaning or stripping charge may apply. Do not send assembled or dirty parts.

TBC – A ceramic Thermal Barrier Coating for engine parts. Applied about .002” thick.
Gold Coat Ceramic Armor – A ceramic Thermal Barrier Coating designed specifically for piston domes in extreme applications such as nitrous, turbo and superchargers. Applied about .003” thick.

Poly Moly – A low friction, anti-seize, self lubricating coating. Applied about .0008” thick when applied to piston skirts.

PC-9 – The latest and most durable piston skirt coating and other applications. Applied about .0008” thick when applied to piston skirts.

PPM – A thin, high load solid film lubricant used for parts with little or no room for a coating. Bearings and other parts are often coated with PPM. Applied about .0002” thick.

White Lightning (TBC-EX) – A ceramic thermal barrier primarily used on the outside of exhaust parts. Applied approximately .015” thick.

BBE – A heat radiating coating to dissipate heat and improve cooling.

Flow Coat – Non-wetable low friction coating.

White Lightning (TBC-EX) Exhaust Coating

Due to the tremendous variations of part configuration, coating prices are estimates only. Exact pricing is based on the actual processing of each specific part. Used parts can be coated. Stripping paint, rust or a previous coating may require an additional charge. Headers with separate primaries (not held together with a flange) or with separate collectors will cost significantly more than the estimates below.

Nobody can get a coating to permanently bond all the way through an exhaust tube unless it is very short and open from both sides. We do not coat the inside of turbo parts so be sure to let us know if you are sending turbo parts so we can mask them properly. Naturally aspirated pipes may be coated on the inside if it looks like the coating will not interfere with the mounting of the pipe to the head or the mating part. If you have any specific masking requirements, be certain to let us know where you want the part to be masked so we know what you are looking for.

10-Cylinder ……………………….........… $350 - 500
8-Cylinder – Conventional or 180Ί ……… $275 - 350
6-Cylinder ……………………………….... $200 - 250
4-Cylinder ………………………….......... $150 - 225
Subaru Flat Header …………………...... $175 - 225
Cast Iron Manifold ………….………....... $150 - 235
Turbo Charger Housing ……………...….. $ 90 - 125
O2 Housing ........................................ $50 - $100
Down Pipe, Crossover, Collector, etc. ... $30 - 40/foot[/b]

Will the coatings allow you to reuse your pistons, or are the ring grooves / cyl. walls in need of work?

I dunno yet, I haven't pulled the block apart. I don't have any place to do so. I'm thinking about buying all new internals and I just gotta find everything first

Any idea on when this will take place?

Well, It needs to hit 1000 bucks to get the discount.  I need to get my project rolling though.  I am going to say Sunday Feb. 24th.  Thats two weeks from today.  If you need to order pistons or other parts, you could just have them shipped to Swain tech instead of to your house, and then back out to Swaintech.

Sounds a bit high to me. I just had my pistons done by a local place and they charged me $105 for all four. Ceramic coated the tops and moly coated the skirts.

I have been playing e-mail tag with swain tech about the group buy.  After the inital e-mail, where they said they would do it if we sent in 1000 worth of parts, they added some more.

"It is not a nuisance to do the work if they come in from individuals, but at
the same time it does not represent a true group buy.

If we cannot gain any efficiencies, it does not make sense to extend a
discount.  We have many forums, owners groups and similar groups of
enthusiast who send us work on a regular basis.  They do not get a discount
just because they are part of a common group.  As I originally explained,
there are a few times where a group is buying everything from one vendor
such as a down pipe.  That vendor ships everything to us and we receive it
all at once.  The person who puts the group buy creates a list as where the
parts will be shipped and that person takes care of payment.

In that type of situation it is a true group buy and some efficiencies can
be gained when we process the parts and in those rare situations we offer a
discount.  If you have that type of situation I can consider a discount.  If
you do not have a true group buy I cannot extend a discount.  It does not
mean it is a nuisance to do the work, nor does it warrant a discount.

Richard"

So it looks like everything gets shipped in in one box, or there is no discount.  I don't know if that approach will work in our situation.

Perhaps if some of you live close enough to each other it could still work.

What do you think.
