Guys,

as you may or may not know, i have a golf TD on a 96 plate which has the boost upped to 1.2bar and fuelling adjusted to match and fitted an intercooler.
i am thinking of adding a second intercooler into the front bumper from a VW Sharan or shall I remove the standrd intercooler to leave me with just one (currently using intercooler from a Golf TDI, wing mounted). Will this be of benefit at all?

I am also thinking of removing one of the silencers removed from the car to leave me with a Cat and the rear silencer only using 2" pipe. Will this see any effect on the performance/engine drivability?

I am also running 50% biodiesel at the moment, should i add millers power diesel additive when using bio?

Hi boss,first thing i would do is to remove the cat,as for the sharan intercooler,i looked at these,nice long slim design,the only trouble is i need inlet and outlet at the same end,  :cry: worth a try,i would not use 2 though,may restrict the flow too much?

turbo back straight pipe.  It won't be loud, 2.5"

Hi Bert, how are you fella?

took out the middle section and now have only the Cat and the backbox and it doesnt feel much different. i would love to remove the Cat but that will have issues at MOT time so thats a no go.

I will try the sharan intercooler once i get a chance to spend some time with the car and see how it runs with both intercoolers and then with one just to see the difference.

The car is running fine with biodiesel and smells a bit like a chiipy but other than that cant really argue with 75p a litre!

The need for a power additive to your biodiesel will depend on the blend you're using.  If you're using a 85% veg oil 15% alcohol mix, you should find that it's slightly more powerful than normal diesel (at least that's my experience).  Running that in a 50-50 mix with normal diesel means you probably won't notice any performance difference from the fuel.
I'd advise changing your fuel filter every six months though as the o-rings in the filters can perish leading to air in the fuel line...  Then again, I run pretty much exclusively on bio, so that could just be me!

If the MOT is similar to the opacity test we have in Sweden, you can empty the cat and use a straight pipe inside. The cat does not affect the smoke-test, but it´s not allowed to remove it either  :roll:

On my Passat there was no gain in removing the cat, but if you turn up your fueling the cat will get clogged at some point so keep an eye on it and leave it in the car.

I have removed cats from gassers too and the power increase is maybe a couple hp tops. The placebo on the other hand...

i have added an inline fuel filter (clear) so i can see how badly it clogs up before the oem filter.

The CAT has to be on the car for the MOT's and i suppose i could have it modified (cut out and replaced by a piece of pipe) so it can be replaced just for the MOT's.

so far performance has been fine but it does smell like a chippy if you stand behind the car !

What I meant was that you cut your cat open on top, remove the honeycomb, put a pipe inside it, weld shut and you´re done.
That way, during MOT the inspector looks at the cat, it looks the same as before, performs the smoke test wich the cat doesn´t affect and you´re good to go.

But as I said, as long as it´s not clogged you won´t gain much by doing this, I´d leave it in the car.
When it smells more like a old diesel, your cat is probably clogged.

nogama old pal,im fine thanks for asking,im an mot tester,believe me remove the cat,it will make NO difference on the mot,its a smoke test in the uk mate,if it was a petrol the cat would need to be there for mot but not diesel,so take it off,trust me,if not i will mot it for you  :?

Thanks for the replies fella's, i am looking into to removing cat and replacing it a straight thru pipe - using nokivasara's idea !
