1Z tdi engine, wiring for boost pressure solinoid
« on: February 03, 2008, 02:12:52 pm »
hi there, i have just fitted a mk3 1Z 1.9 tdi engine into my mk2 golf,
but not sure how to wire up the boost pressure solinoid.
and also the other solinoid with the blue/red/black pipes.

they both have two pin plugs, i tried giving them both earth's and lives, but the car would not rev up past 2000rpm.

please help

thanks

Are you using ECU or Mechanical pump? The boost valve (N75) with ECU uses pulse width modulation - not direct current. With Mechanical Pump - and waste gate style turbo (K03 and such) you can use direct current with hobbs switch.

hi there,
from the looks of thinhg the diesel pump has been changed to mechanical, what exactly do you mean by "

direct current with hobbs switch",  as it looks like this is what i will have to do

the 1Z engine came out of a mk3 golf which originally had an AAZ engine fitted to it. so from the looks of things they have fitted the AAZ diesel pump onto the 1Z engine, and didnt bother wiring up the boost pressure solinoid etc.

i would love to put a 1Z pump back on and source the correct wiring and ecu for the engine, but for now i will have to make do with what i have

many thanks for your reply.

If you go mechanically with your 1/Z turbo, no need the N75 solenoid.

Without N75, the boost will be approximately 9-10 psi, you will have to adjust the wastegate manually for 14-15psi.

As TinTin said, the easiest method is to just put a pressure gauge in your car and play with the adjustment rod until it reaches the pressure you want.  My 2.3TD operate this way. If you want to use the solenoid, you need to get a hobbs switch (pressure switch) and adjust it until it triggers at the desired boost pressure.  It will then close the contacts and send power to you solenoid. If you want to have a daily driving boost and a racing boost, then you can put two hobbs switches in parallel (one adjusted to high boost, the other adjusted to standard boost) with a SPDT switch and toggle from one setting to the other on the fly. Thats a cool feature to have..especially if your wife drives the car and does not know where the switch is.

cheap to make and you can upgrade to VNT electronic control. It uses actual PWM control, which is what the N75 was designed for.

thanks for the advice guys,
its not that i want to use the pressure solenoid, i just assumed that the engine would need it to boost properly, but now that i know that there is a way around it, ill just go with the boost gauge idea and a fiddle with the actuator.

any idea what the other solenoid does (the one with the red, blue and black pipes going to it).

sorry to sound dumb but im not an expert when it comes to tdi's,
and this is the first petrol to turbo diesel conversion that i have done.

it would of helped alot if the donor car had the correct engine and wiring in it, but sods law and my luck, it didnt
