I do need to change the TOB for sure.....it rattles at idle.
I am switching out the tranny aswell....
I just dont know which cars the FF came on, and is it a good choice for a 1.9IDI???
Does the FF trans TOB rattle at idle, or the trans that is currently mated to your engine? If it's the latter, then it won't be problem since you'll be tossing the 1.9 trans anyway. Chances are the TOB in the FF is fine.
If you need to replace it, the TOB is located INSIDE of the trans, behind that round, green metal cover.
The FF is a decent match for a 1.9IDI, but perhaps not the best match. I believe that the 1.9 IDI originally had a 3.67 final drive (I'm in the US, and have only seen one 1.9 IDI trans). If that is the case, then you might try to find a trans with the same final drive. The 1.9 motor had more power, hence, the lower final drive. The FF has 3.89 gears, so it will rev higher (not by much) at higway speeds.
Another thing to consider, the FF has smaller output flanges (the round cups where the CV joints bolt to), than does the current trans in your 1.9IDI. You will have to swap those onto your FF trans to make it work.
ALSO!!!! If you're planning on putting this FF trans into a MK 2 or newer car, it
WILL NOT WORK. The newer transmissions have bosses on the final drive casing for the rear motor mount used on MK 2 and newer cars. The FF
DOES NOT HAVE THESE BOSSES. So, you won't be able to mount up your trans. If you've done a 1.9 IDI swap into a MK 1 Rabbit or Jetta, then you'll be fine.
The best thing to do, is to look for your current trans code on this spreadsheet:
http://www.scirocco.org/gears/Then, look for transmission code that has the same final drive, the same 5th gear, and the same size output flanges (output flange size is listed in a box on the lower right).
Given what (little) I have seen of 1.9 IDI transmission, I would expect your trans code to be either ATH, DFP, CHD, AMC, DFQ, or CHE. All of these trans have 100 mm output flanges, 3.67 final drive, and .80 or lower fith gear (good for highway cruising at low RPMs).
Those are all MK 3 codes. If you want an earlier MK 2 trans without the reverse gear problem, that shares the same final drive, gear spread and output flange size, then you're looking at an AON or an ACL code trans.
Good Luck!
