• I was under the impression that the 02J was stronger than the 02A which is why I wanted the 02J.

• I think the difference is in the way the diff is put together, since 02A and 02J share the same gear sets.
  
  The mk3 box I have is externally an 02A, but it has an 02J diff - presumably to handle the torque of the TDI.
