Can't hear K03?
« on: January 22, 2008, 05:58:41 pm »
Is it normal to not hear a K03 turbo spool because it is so small.  I went for a ride in an older 1.6l jetta and you could really hear that thing.  I am not sure what the turbo was, T3 maybe, but I can't hear a thing in my 1.9 Jetta?  It is spooling because I can feel it but I can't hear it.

They seem to vary. My current Quantum has a quiet kkk. One of my other 'resting' Quantae has a beautiful warble. Gives a sound like a fishtail exhaust.
Before I bought that one in (fact the first QTD I ever tried) had a whistle so loud that driving with the window down was uncomfortable and I told the chap trying to sell it to me so. He said that's what turbos do! Thank goodness I didn't give up on diesels.
Is a screaming turbo dieing? I dunno :?

i've always found T3's to be quite loud. My passat's k03 is silent too.

i can hear mine pretty good... i don't think its a sign of dying.  its just the sound of the turbo breaking the sound barrier (maybe 20'000 to 30'000 rpm's??)  at full song my turbo doesn't really make any noise except for sound of rushing air

Maybe the K03 is so small and turns so fast it is beyond human hearing. Do all the dogs in the neighborhood tart barking as you drive by?

lol no... that would be cool to limit the turbo speed to the frequency of a dog whistle though

Our family dog would always get up & head to the door about 2 minutes before my mother's Quantum showed up in the driveway.
