356TD engine mounting angle
« on: March 29, 2005, 06:03:02 am »
Continuing research on the proposed 356TD project. Got my catalog from Kennedy Engineering, v. cool! While I wouldn't say they make a kit for any imaginable swap, they sure make a lot of swaps possible.   8)

Kennedy's kits for Rabbit style engines to type 1 trannies are available in a choice of 3 different mounting angles. Straight up, inclined 15 degrees as in A1's, or inclined 50 degrees ala Vanagons. My concern is getting the engine mounted without the cam sprocket hitting the engine lid. It seems that by drilling/tapping, the engine could be "clocked" anywhere between 15 and 50 degrees to make that clearance problem go away. My questions for you guys would be:
How far over do you think the engine could be mounted with it's current Quantum oil pan/pickup/turbo drain before I would be risking oiling problems?
Is there a way, using Vanagon parts, to mount the engine in the 50 degree position, and still get the turbo oil to drain properly?

Also found some cool sites you guys might like:

Check out the "Conversion Perversions" forum, and don't worry, it is not a trans-gender site (unless you consider crossing the watercooled/aircooled line as a rough equivalent).

This has some really wild stuff, my personal fave is the Bug with the aircooled V8 Tatra engine in it,  -- I'd like to try that, but I'm afraid that it might void my warranty

my bet : the 50 degrees angle is the better one but you will need the vanagon oil pan and oil pick-up or a custom welded oil pan with a custom turbo drain (hint: your favorite hydraulic shop can do it for cheap)

forget about the long stroke 1.9TD/TDI, they are way higher than any 1.6

this is the way I will try in my bug (I won't modify the car lines to fit the engine; if the 1.6td can't go in, a rotary mazda will.(economy or power?)
