So we got stuck last night on a patch of ice and we worked the motor fairly hard to get off of it, about two miles down the road she stalled out and wouldn't start.
When I try to start it it turns over much more rapidly then it ever has (I'd say almost twice as fast). I noticed a minor fuel leak from the injectors but it wasn't causing any problems so I was waiting til this paycheck to solve it. Lo and behold, problems.
I'm still pretty new to diesels (like 3 weeks sigh) so I have yet to go over the bleeding the fuel lines. I'm going to change the fuel filter and the fuel line from black to clear and try to find a guide to bleeding the lines.
It definitely sounds like it's getting no diesel as only the first two rotations sound "normal" then the others actually sound like a gas engine turning over.
Any advice to a newbie?

Timing belt break or slip? Turning over easy means compression is going somewhere. Take the valve cover off and see if the cam turns with the engine, and if it does, if the slot in the back of the cam is even with the top surface of the head with the engine at TDC.

So yeah after forcing diesel through the lines I looked down to see my crank pulley resting ever so lightly on my muffler. My friend had down shifted snapping the bolt. The bolt comes in on Wed. =(
Last time I ever let a friend drive my vanagon? Yesterday.

Don't forget the head gasket and probably new valves to replace the bent ones, valve seals and possibly guides, lifters if they are screwed. If you really want to do it right, do a search for crank mod and get the TDI timing gear to help keep it from happening again.

well if the engine is turning over fast and there isn't noticeable clunking noise coming from the head, then there should be a few destroyed pieces in there
it's a shame that people need to learn the hard way about the AAZ crank failure. people should be re-directed to this site once they buy a diesel

I wouldn't blame your friend too much as it's kind of a design flaw with the AAZ. It would have happened sooner or later regardless.
