can someone please show me what bits i need and don't need as i'm really starting to get stressed staring at the looms trying to work out where everything should go

The minimum you need to make it run is move your coil wire to the fuel shutoff solenoid, and hook the glowplugs up through a glowplug relay or a manual switch and relay. The rest is just gauges, which you should hook up, but it will run without them.

sorry but i'm not familiar with diesel termanology, hence me asking for pictures/wiring diagrams, part numbers of the relays/solinoids etc i need would be helpful

1) What type of gasser do you have?
2)If you have a carburetter gasser then remove all wires gointo the carb and inlet manifold area. Also fold away those wires for high and low temp cutoff for choke.  One of these wires could be used for the temp sensor mentioned below.
Where the manifold preheater wire(red )goes onto the fusebox/relay area remove. Run fat red/white wire from glowplugs to inline fuse and onplace of above wire.  Remove whaever relay is on position  2nd from left and 2nd row counting from bottom. In this spot the glowplug relay will fit.  What is then missing is a wire up to the back of the diesel glow LED and a wire that goes out to a water temp sensor on rad top hose near block.  I think the positions are B6 and D13 on back of that relay carrier. Niether are essential as long as you have that red/whitewire put on position 'N' Mk1's used 'H' I believe.
  As said before if you have a coil then use the black wire on the +ve terminal to attach to the terminal on the diesel fuel pump. If you can clobber a diesel tach setup then attaching a wire from the back of the alternator 'W' to the red/black wire from the coil will supply the signal to the tach.

but that makes no sense at all atm!

i've got the loom from the mk2 that i wanted to use, i just need to know what goes where on the two mk2 relays (i know the large black one is the glow plugs) but what dose that silver vag one need to run?

If Mark's post made no sense to you or you're needing a picture-by-picture cookbook you might be in a bit over your head... swaps are not overly complicated but they will demand more than a passing familiarity the rudiments diesel technology, specifically the fuel and electrical systems.  Simple though they are it's probably more than you'll  be able to pick up in a couple of forum posts unfortunately.

Someone should write a book someday, but in the meantime it's pretty much google read google read google read,  and then dive in.   :wink:

nevermind, if it's that hard to put itno real terms with part numbers and wiring diagrams, guess i'll just put the graft in myself and put it on paper for people who may need it in the future.

the one thing that really gets to me on this site is the fact that no one puts things in real terms, it's all quite anal in the way thing are phrased and yet there is no clrtiy in peoples descriptions, there have been a few people who have been very helpful but yet there are still the few like the resposes above which aren't comprehendable to a newb to this diesel lark and then i get told i'm over my head!!!!!

We try to help, but you have to put in some effort as well. It's your engine, you better get to know what parts are what, especially basic parts like the fuel solenoid. Do you have a manual? If not you better get one before you do anything else. There are lots of posts on this forum that show where everything is. There is no sense in reposting posts over and over, and no sense in getting mad at us because you lack the effort to do a little research yourself. I read this forum for months before I got my engine, learning all that I could, even about TDI's, which I never planned on having. We are willing to help, but we aren't willing to do EVERYTHING for you, because if we do, you have learned nothing.

Quite frankly my post was simply intended to perhaps spare you some frustration.

You actually did not ask for a "little" help... you asked for a full step-by-step, complete with pictures, part numbers, and wiring diagrams,  written for someone who doesn't know much about diesels.  

If thats what you need to get the job done I humbly submit that  you might in fact be in over your head... no such document exists as far as most of us know... so it's gonna be a frustrating battle for you.  You're already frustrated at us... just wait till you get to the car !!!

As jimfoo puts it... no offense intended... just a matter of no one here having the time to put such a manual together.  A couple of diagrams and pictures won't do it.  

I personally think it would be great if you document your experiences as you put yours together.... obviously that's a gap in the state of the Internet's documentation for sure.
