I know i read here all the time that the egt gauge should be mounted in the exhaust manifold, but what if it is mounted in the downpipe right next to the turbo. How accurate would the readings be? Im assuming it would read on the cooler side. Is anyone running a setup like this or do all have it in the manifold?
Also the reading is much delayed.
Look at the kit manufacturers...Banks, ATS, etc... Do Any of them put the probe downstream? Its much more expensive to put it in the manifold, so why would they do that?
Post turbo, as mentioned, has lag and the temperature accuracy varies greatly with load, boost pressure and probe location.
Preturbo is the only way to go if you want any kind of accuracy.

On my AAZ the exhaust manif features a port (EGR) . Would this be a reasonable location for a thermometer sending unit? Thanks.

Don't do it.
For adjusting your fuel and boost to make more power, its junk.
If you like to have a pritty gauge that moves up and down, its ok.
Put it befor the turbo. Its an easy drill and tap:

Some people have drilled through the stud hole right above the location I chose, and had good results.
Some people successfully drilled and tapped the manifold on the car while its idleing to blow out the chips.
I haven't heard of any one saying that they tried to put it preturbine and wrecked their manifold/car.
No, it has to be in the middle of the moving exhaust stream.

Ditto.
I think the best place you can put it is right an the confluence of all of the runners, in the most restricted (skinniest) spot which would also be hottest place.

As everyone has mentioned it will vary as to how far it's off but you can count on at least 300-500deg differance AND it will be slow to react.
So I will 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 times what has already been said, put it in the exhaust manifold.

For those of you who have like myself to make the EGT decision described above I suggest reading the attached links. I found it a useful addition to this thread:
