Hi,
I have two oil pumps to choose from on my rebuild, both are from late model (86' JP Code, Hydraulic Head) engines. I'm wondering if there's an easy way to tell if they're 36mm or not?
Thanks in advance.
86->30mm pumps, 100% sure. VW started to use the 36mm units in late 87 early 88
Cool guys, thanks for the replies.
I'll crack them both open to measure for sure. Would a 30mm if that's what I have be considered insufficient to supply both a hydraulic head and additional oil squirters on an originally NA engine?
So you guys are saying if you have a hydrolic head then you have the 36mm?
I dont think so, both my blocks are hydraulic (we got very few solid lifter heads here) and that would contradict what BSD has said above.
Question, when is someone going to measure the outside of the 36 mm pump and compare it to the outside of a 30 mm pump?
When at salvage yard quick and dirty is best!
Also, does the style of pick-up tube change with the year or with the size of the gears?

The 36 mm pump is taller but I dont have one with me at the moment to compair.
I still have a extra 36mm pump just sitting here if someone needs one.

neither the '88 engine in my car now , or the '90 engine i pulled out had the bigger oil pump .
