odometer/trip meter
« on: January 08, 2008, 02:35:02 pm »
My odometer and trip meter are working intermittantly.  Just got the car and both were working fine.  Got close to 99 miles and it stopped working.  Drove about another 60 miles and then it started working again.  Does this sound like a cable issue or odometer issue?  Seems like the later to me.  Anyone have any experience with this particular problem.

John

You don't mention what vehicle you're referring to, but this is an extraordinally common problem with early water-cooled VWs (particularly the A1 series 1976-85ish).

Googling for "VW odometer repair" will yield tons of information, including this nice pictoral how-too from our very own VW Caddy:

Mine does the same thing except mine seems to work only below like 60kph...and even then,  it seems to get stuck on the 9's for some reason lol. I have another cluster apart right now and noticed that the gears inside are press fit onto little steel rods and possibly the gears are slipping on the rods or are out of alignment or something. I'll be taking my other one apart this weekend to solve this.
