WTB diesel Vanagon dash foil
« on: January 05, 2008, 06:04:45 pm »
Since I actually got a little response on my last quest for parts, I figured I'd throw this out at you guys.

Milliseconds after a groggy, early morning, mid-flight dash light adjustment, a bunch of the smoke came out of my dash foil, mostly the dash light circuit, but also the turn signal indicator circuit too. Nighttime driving renders vital signs "out of sight, out of mind" - no biggee really but this time last week I was on the side of the 23 freeway in 1000 Oaks with no fuel in the tank on a steep uphill grade so I suppose it's time to have dashlights again. Checking vitals by the warm glow of a cellphone is no fun anymore.

Does anyone have a dash foil from a diesel Vanagon? I'm sure it's obvious but it's diesel specific for the glow plug light.

Thanks again
Chris

PS - I know Lucas makes a wiring harness smoke replacement kit, will it work with my Bosch electricals or should I search out a Bosch smoke kit? I have a feeling it's a Lucas specific thing with their reputation and all.

Thanks - I've yet to see a diesel dash or foil on there.

Not what you're after... but in case you give up looking.. there are repair kits for printed circuit boards that might work in this case... *if* you can see the damage.  They use a special conductive paint.

Or, if you can see the damage, you should be able to run some bypasses with thin wire and a low wattage soldering iron ??

Just a thought or two if your search becomes fruitless !!  ;-)

This isn't like a regular hard PC board. When it shorts, it melts the plastic laminate for the length of the "wire". Common PCB repairs won't work as far as I can tell.

I did think about running some bypass wires but I'd like to keep it original. I have a gas dash foil but I'd have to remove the OXS light sockets and move them to the glow plug side and I don't think the laminate will take the heat of desoldering/soldering the socket lugs.
