i have a 1.6 na diesel that i will be adding a turbo to on tuesday... ill be using all na parts except for turbo and intake manifold (intake man. is from a digifant gasser with butterflies removed from the tb), and i will be running 2.5" exhaust... my question is, what kind of power gains should i see with this if i only run betweek 8-10psi?? i plan on turning the smoke screw in just a hair for some added fuel, but i wanna keep the egt's down so i probably wont turn it up too much...
any tips would be greatly appreciated...

Dont even think about trying it without a pyrometer.

Are you using the TD exhaust manifold?

I'm assuming you have custom oil lines and have clocked the turbo already since the exhaust manifold will have to be flipped (or not stock)?

I think you'll see about a 20% increase in HP, not sure on torque

if we are speculating a 20% increase in hp I'm gonna go with about 50% increase in torque.

its the td exhaust mani. and turbo from a mk2... i have a good oil return, and the oil line going into the turbo will be fed from the oil filter flange... the coolant hoses will go from the heater core to the turbo and then from the turbo to the head... only thing that im concerned about is the boost tubing... im not sure how to run it without loosing a lot of pressure since i gotta flip the manifold...

If you are planning on flipping the manifold you need new oil lines.
It sounds like you got a turbo from across the pond? I don't think we ever got any watercooled turbos in North America.

Personally I would get a TD intake and save the hassle of clocking the turbo and getting new oil lines. The stock manifold is good for about 150 HP which is probably well out of your engines capabilities

know where one is for sale? i wanted one so i didnt have to clock the turbo, but i couldnt find one for a decent price...

40.000km and counting with turbo with many trips at 140/160km/h loaded and its not stock fueling...136hp :wink:

report back after 60,000km.

I could be a little off here, but I have found that if you alter a design from numerous engineers that were payed lots of money, its best to implement some tools to see what you have done. You could be missing out on a lot of power/fuel economy because you are not using the right tools.

driving in the same conditions i found that now the engine is by far more pleasant to drive and the economy is better.
5L/100km is usually what i get and that is in various driving styles,not snailing around

When I put the AAZ in my Vanagon, I added a pyrometer shortly after the conversion without doing any mods. I realized that I regularly been pushing 1500 degrees of EGT. The pyrometer is an excellent tuning tool as it can help you dial in the engine much better than sight and feel. I was too chicken to continue to drive the Vanagon the way I was before the gauge was installed as it was rather scary what I had already been doing to it before I put the gauge in. Without a doubt, I could have not put the gauge in and melted the hell out of the engine. I am very glad I put it in. I can now watch what the engine is doing and back off the throttle if I need to instead of melting the motor.

what was your water temperatures that time?
my engine driving at 140km/h stay relativelly cool,the needle stays before the temp light in the midle of gauge.
and to drive at that speed i ony need a bit of throtle,boost is 0.4 bar(with closed WG) so i think egt wount be that high...

yea... searching for pyrometers online, and they are expensive... anyone have a used one to sell?
