Author Topic: WTB - 1.6TD Vanagon oil return hose, oil cooler mount (Read 5237 times)

I'm trying to replace the mangled turbo oil return hose in my Vanagon and don't really know where to look for a replacement. Good used is fantastic by me.

Also I'd like to swap the angled oil cooler mount for a straight mount so I can stop unstrapping my coolant hoses every time I change oil.

What'll it take to get this stuff to 93545?

Angled mount? I'm assuming the motor originally came out of a Quantum? The oil return line will depend on what motor your car came out of IIRC.

Yea, this van got a VW rebuilt TD engine a few years back. I think it was a Quantum application but I'm not sure on the bolt-on bits.

Not many junkyards here in rancher country, even less TD VWs around. Are there any gotchas when shopping classifieds/ebay for the oil cooler mount?

I'll get pics when this storm clears up in a couple days.

I saw those yesterday but I'm not familiar enough with this stuff to know what I'm looking at. If you're ready to get rid of a cooler mount, I'll trust your judgement that it'll fit in place of my angled mount, and work with the cooler and turbo oil supply. Ok - pictures. They're by far not the best, but it's not easy getting under there with the rattle shield in place.

First pic shows the mangled part of the hose, protuding through a hole in the shield. Um, the shield is pushed up from the rock that damaged the hose - there used to be more clearance between hose and shield.

Second pic shows the configuration - kinda. For reference, the bottom of the picture is generally horizontal, thus the hose is generally horizontal with a dip in the middle. Peeking at the turbo, the big cast drain/hose adapter mounts at nearly 45 degrees to the turbo. From what I can see, no way would I ever get the oil drain "straight down" and still have it drain to the pan.

Guidance, please - speak now if you have the part!

I realize this, but with that huge hose adapter, there's no possible way to rotate the oil outlet straight down without adding a sump pump to push the oil back up to the pan.

What is needed to both clock the turbo correctly and get the oil to drain back to the pan? It looks like that wart between hose and turbo needs to be removed and have the hose attach direct to the turbo, maybe even repace the flex hose with a hard line.

My first thought was to get some kinda AN adapter fittings and some regular Aeroquip type hose but then reading about the oddball thread sizes used by VW threw me off that search. But yea, your method, at least at the turbo end is super easy (easier when I had workspace/machine tools) but still not out of the question. It never occured to me to build my own plate at the turbo and just pop in a NPT to AN fitting (45 degree would be perfect here). I guess next step is to drop the rattle shield and look at the pan a little closer.

I've read so much on proper turbo drain and knowing that my hose has been beat for a year and half now, I figure I should get going on that, then seeing the actual turbo clocking has moved that closer to the top of the list of things to do.

Are you saying the Quantum and TD Van shared exhaust manifolds? I don't know about all the options out there - this is my first diesel VW and 2 years of ownership have seen me having fun with it more than exploring some of the reasons I bought it (WVO, conversions, etc). Maybe next weekend I'll drop the sheet metal and get better pictures for you. Otherwise all that you mentioned concerning turbos and whatnot is beyond me - about all I know is that it was more fun to drive when I had a boost referenced IP before buying a new non-turbo pump (still bitter about that one).

Um, my ultimate goal is to swap to a TDI but the 1.6 runs so well, I have nowhere to take the van down for a week or so and all my tools are 5 hours away (by diesel vanagon figures) so I just have to wait and hope that the 1.6 stays healthy.
