Hard starting on 93 td...why??
« on: March 25, 2005, 01:33:18 am »
I have noticed just the last few weeks that shes starting hard, maybe veen harder than in the winter.
I know my timing is off, could this be why?
She starts right up, but chugs and chugs and smokes for a while, total incomplete combustion.

What could cause, I KNOW i am way overdue for a fuel filter?
After shes runnign she runs very well, very strong!

Sounds like a bad glow plug. New ones go bad just as often as old ones so check them all.

I had the same problem you have described, and it turned out to be glow plugs. Almost the same time of year. It just got really hard to start, wasn't that cold out. Changed the glow plugs, and it was perfect again. All winter it started with no problems, they just fail all of a sudden.

Are you sure you used the correct ones? Some jobbers and dealers still have the old non-self regulating fast glow plugs. These will burn out quite quickly in a 1.9 because they stay on for 3 minutes. Make sure the boxes say "duraterm" on them and the glow plugs should have a thin tapered tip. The old fast glow plugs have a blunt rounded tip.

Mine had the same symptoms.

Ended up to be bad injectors. They would skirt rather than spray, wich gave me about 3 minutes of rough idle and mises when temperature was below 5°C.

The bosch part number is 0 250 201 032. This may be the same part number as older fast glow plugs but the plug in the box should be a duraterm. There could be some old stock around though. Beru also makes a self regulating glow plug that is suitable for use in 1.9TD and 1.6 fast glow systems. The part number is GN857.

well i've been living with bad starting for a while now, will this hurt my engine in any way?  (If not I'll just change them later when its warm out, nice smoke coming from the back of my car when I start lol)

my guess is that this won't hurt my engine, but if anyone has any other opinion I'd like to hear it (maybe the extreme bucking??? mix that in with my bad motor mount too...)
