I think it's the top right relay, possibly the second one in. It has 2 huge brass(?) terminals and around 5 other ones. If you pull them one at a time you'll know which one I mean

Terminal or relay?
Relay may well be either the 'X' relay which basically reduces current through ignition and turns off certain functions when cranking or it may be the flasher relay.[only 3 terminals]

it's a silver metal vag one, looks similar to the one they use to regulate the ecu in digifant motors.

IIRC, load reductin relay drops out the wipers, the heater fan, rear defrogger, and......
Need it....not if you turn EVERYTHING off before shutting down vehical.
I personally get in there and rebuild the fuse/relay plate so the following happens when I start my diesel:
1)When the Alt light is on, there is NO power except to the glow plugs
and the key's input so you get just the 50 terminal "hot" when you
turn to the start position. (Thats right, no radio, lights, wipers,
heater fan, nada!)
2)Once the Alt light goes out, THEN there is power for evey thing else.
Yes I know what a PITA! Does make sure whatever power I have goes to the GP's and starter thou!
And yes it does take a few extra heavy duty relays, makes trouble shooting quite fun, and when a conection goes bad, well, like I said PITA!
Can't remember what the little term is for, GP light? maybe?

so what you're saying is that the relay takes all the power and dedicates it to the start?

It basically cuts power to all the unneeded accessories when starting the car. Only the essentials get power. MK1s already have a load reduction relay (x relay) wired in

that's brilliant guys

The x relay as I said drops out some of the power hungy stuff, as I also said, I "remodeled" mine to alow no power except for starting.
For gasser conversion, From gas to diesel, Yes?................
Get engine harness, front (I don't rember how they did this {Tyler?} The dash harness or what ever it's called, relay plate/fuse box for the year of the motor you are installing. Then drink more beers, you will need them!
Decide what featuers you want, and build them in.
Fun, HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!! Okay so its also a little pita. SO WHAT?
yes i am a bit crazy............ YOU will have what you want in YOUR vehical, because thats what you wanted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, got a bit over well-meaded.
Gods I love VW elctrical work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
