Well I finally got it to crank over faster. One of our friends is a logger and had owned many diesel engines and worked on them. Once I told him that I advanced the timing on pump, he suggested that I back it off. The engine was turning over way too hard he said. So I retarted the timing (pump was almost up against one of the fuel pipes!) and cranked it over. It cranked over alot faster but still wouldn't fire. I also tightened the timing belt as it had stretched for some reason and was ready to fall off.
I don't know what to do now as I have replaced the ground wire and installed a brand new terminal. Engine cranks over alot faster and longer now. I still need to do a compression test and test glowplugs. I pulled one and it had engine oil on it :?: . There is lots of fuel getting to the injectors.
Ever since I installed a 5spd tranny from gasser Rabbit it has had problems like this.

if i'm not mistaken the starter receives its ground from the transmission? did you run a fat ground straight to the tranny?
also what CCA is the battery? some places are stupid and sell you the gasoline rated battery  recommended battery for these diesels is a 1000 CCA battery.

The ground connects to the tranny mount on the driver side and also to the car body. I just went to Wal-Mart and used the computer to find out what battery to use. It had Volkswagen Rabbit 1.6 but it did not specify diesel or gasser. diesel most likely.

The battery that you want is a Group 41.
